The Netsuke started out as a simple piece of bone or wood attached to a string and used for hanging items such as pill bottles,  writing utensils from the Obi ( cloth belt of the Kimono ).   Over a period of time beginning in the early Edo Period,  they evolved into an ART FORM of their own.    Many skilled carvers of wood,  ivory,  bone, etc. participated in carving Netsuke.  The great interest in Netsuke evolved as a direct result of Tobacco being introduced to Japan from the WEST.

They were used to hang the pipe,  pipe case,  and tobacco pouch from the Obi for easy access.
