Unsigned tanto in black shirasaya

Hello Matt,

At first glance, it looked like a potentially nice blade, but then there is the Nakago. Was the Nakago damaged buy grinding/filing/sandpaper, before you obtained it? That level of damage puts the value in question now.

Interestingly too, I've never seen what appears to be a Shirasaya that has been lacquered or one with a Seppa.

More knowledgeable folks will most likely chime in soon.

Mark

@MHC , this is the the way I got it. Those are the original file marks not sandpaper or grinder. The dark spots are low spots in the steel when originally filed/shaped. I thought it looked strange when I first got it as well. Just thought it was a neat tanto as Ive never seen one like this. Again, I wished I had more info. It came from as estate sale.
