Up for sale are four Japanese coins:

 

     1 Gold 2 Bu coin, 1859-1869, 19mmX12mm 

     2 Silver 1 Bu coins, 1859-1868, 23mmX15mm and 24mmX16mm

     1 Silver 1 Shu coin, 1853-1865, 15mmX9mm

I used to have a bunch of these. Legal tender until the end of the Edo Period, they were easy to carry (in a secret slide in your saya for example) and exchange for cash coins for everyday purchases. The social and historical background is worth studying.

 

Sadly, I gave half of them to my daughter some years ago, and the other half will probably go to the other one in due course.

I know the important thing with these coins, especially the ones made in gold, is when they were minted. This due to the shogunate’s propensity to alter the content of precious metals in their coins.
