Money box

Seems like a chest with lacquer work? This one has a design featuring coins but there are countless types and subjects. I'm not sure the coins and plaques here are lacquer themselves but they could be.

I can't put my finger on it but the work makes me lean more to Chinese than Japanese but I'm not sure.

Grev, when you tap the coins, are they cold, solid, metallic, real coins, or created out of lacquer to look like coins?

If they are real, they are worth something. The large rectangular silver 一分銀 Ichibu Gin are collector items, as is the little gold 二朱金 Ni-Shu Kin. (Another possibility is that they were recreated specially for this box creation in copper, and gilded or otherwise treated to look like real old coins.)

Not quite identical, Grev. Each minting showed a slight variation. One of the stars on an Ichibu-Gin is always upside down for example, and the positioning of that odd one out changed by date. None of these were minted after 1869, right at the very beginning of Meiji.

From the position of the stars, Chris's one above is a Tempo example, worth around 70 USD. (If I've read the chart right!)
