Fuchi/Kashira info sought

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been offered this fuchi/kashira and i'm liking everything i'm seeing, however i'm new to this side of collecting and i'd appreciate some feedback from more experienced collectors. I know it's a shoki/oni scene and that the nanako is decent but that's as much as i can see.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ahh, the ancient oni demon playing guitar motif.  Goes back to the ancient shredding technique of the heavy metals.  It is said that it beats rock and even when it rolls.

Wish I could add more than a stupid joke and that I personally really like them.  Can see the detail and quality and oni are a somewhat uncommon theme to see really well done in my searching experience.  Plus they are just cool.

Like Adam said, the Oni stealing Shoki's Sword is a classic, humorous scene.  I'm wondering what is going on with Shoki's face.  It looks like it sustained extensive damage and someone has tried to repair / cover up the damage.  Look closely at his face and beard - I wouldn't buy it without getting better photos of that area and making sure it is not damaged.

Shoki should look like this:

Signed "Sano Naoyoshi with Kao". The no character is not the one that is shown in the Meikan and the kao is a bit off. Only three examples in the Meikan. The work is very good though. He is rated joko in the Meikan. As Tanto54 has said the kashira appears to have had some damage repaired. Shoki's face may have been banged in at sometime?

Thank you all for the input. I don't know what i'd do without this site and its users, truly an incredible resource!

I'll ask for a close-up of the face and keep you updated. I agree that it does look odd, i imagine this type of damage would be difficult and costly to repair.
