Tsuba: Kusunoki Masashige Theme

fullsizeoutput_9a5.thumb.jpeg.2cd497c16abeeaad57b3aec383f4b5dc.jpegfullsizeoutput_9a5.thumb.jpeg.2cd497c16abeeaad57b3aec383f4b5dc.jpegThis large iron tsuba boasts a theme that is a proud, direct reference to one of the most illustrious figures in Japanese buke history, Kusunoki Masashige.  The Chrysanthemum-on-River crest is tightly associated with Kusunoki (see links below).  At 8.2 x 7.7 cm, the tsuba is katana-sized, and feature mokume-esque folding in its construction.  At the edges of the tsuba, the manifold layers are clearly visible.  This is a feature commonly associated with Hoan work (the term uwabami-gane fits here, I think, as a kantei point for Shodai Hoan guards).  Though these photos don't show this, multiple layers are clearly visible in the walls of the nakago-ana. 

 

Subtle amida-yasuri rays are lightly expressed on the plate, emanating from the nakago-ana, and the carving of the chrysanthemums and river water is sensitively, yet crisply rendered.  On the ura seppa-dai, there is a bit of delamination that has a touch of rust to it; I imagine this could be attended to if one were so inclined.
