Steve Waszak
This large iron tsuba boasts a theme that is a proud, direct reference to one of the most illustrious figures in Japanese buke history, Kusunoki Masashige. The Chrysanthemum-on-River crest is tightly associated with Kusunoki (see links below). At 8.2 x 7.7 cm, the tsuba is katana-sized, and feature mokume-esque folding in its construction. At the edges of the tsuba, the manifold layers are clearly visible. This is a feature commonly associated with Hoan work (the term uwabami-gane fits here, I think, as a kantei point for Shodai Hoan guards). Though these photos don't show this, multiple layers are clearly visible in the walls of the nakago-ana. Subtle amida-yasuri rays are lightly expressed on the plate, emanating from the nakago-ana, and the carving of the chrysanthemums and river water is sensitively, yet crisply rendered. On the ura seppa-dai, there is a bit of delamination that has a touch of rust to it; I imagine this could be attended to if one were so inclined. $450, plus shipping. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusunoki_Masashige https://www.oocities.org/azuchiwind/samurai2.htm https://japanesecastle.jp/1872/

Steve Waszak
Hi Kevin, Okay, very good. The tsuba is yours. Congratulations: it's a very appealing guard, and extremely well made. I shall mark it as "SOLD," then. Cheers, Steve
