Babu Posted August 6, 2020 Report Posted August 6, 2020 Hi translators. I once managed to find this artist but I've misplaced all my references. All I know is that he was well known for woodblock prints but this is not a print this is a very complicated painting over a material I can only describe as a sort of corduroy but silk so must have been hard to paint on such a texture . Very fine material and very odd. Could anyone translate the mei and also the oblong seal? Thank you Adam Quote
SteveM Posted August 6, 2020 Report Posted August 6, 2020 豊國画 Toyokuni ga The seal below is the mark and seal of the publisher, Nishimuraya Yohachi, but I can't make out the words in the seal. In other seals he uses stylized versions of 出版 or 出板 (shuppan - publish) and it looks like it could be a similar device here. But I can't say for sure. Quote
Babu Posted August 6, 2020 Author Report Posted August 6, 2020 Thanks Steve. Utagawa Toyokuni II (1777–1835), also known as Toyoshige. If that's a printers mark then it's possible that someone has copied a woodblock print as a painting. This is no woodblock print I've microscoped it. Interesting. Thanks to you good sir . Quote
SteveM Posted August 7, 2020 Report Posted August 7, 2020 I think the seal says 永寿板 (Eijūban), using a stylized version of 寿/壽. Eijūban refers to the name of the publishing house, Eijūdō. Quote
Babu Posted August 7, 2020 Author Report Posted August 7, 2020 Thank you Steve. One more if I may, another painting. Regards Adam Quote
SteveM Posted August 7, 2020 Report Posted August 7, 2020 芳月堂正名 Hōgetsudō shōmei 奥村文角政信正筆 Okumura Fumikado Masanobu shōhitsu The artist is Okumura Masanobu, who used the art name Hōgetsudō (among others) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okumura_Masanobu Quote
Babu Posted August 7, 2020 Author Report Posted August 7, 2020 Brilliant thanks Steve. Can you hazard a guess at what the gourd shaped seal is only I'm leaning towards this all being a more recent copy. The writings not as neat and the gourd is different. Thank you Adam Quote
SteveM Posted August 7, 2020 Report Posted August 7, 2020 The gourd has another art name in it, 丹鳥斎 (Tanchōsai) Quote
Babu Posted August 7, 2020 Author Report Posted August 7, 2020 Excellent thanks. I'll try to work out what that means. Regards Adam Quote
