Eboshi Kabuto

It looks to be a nice enough example of its type, however it looks as if the fukigayeshi have been broken off and the lacquer of the shikoro is in a bad state and will continue to drop off unless you can stabilise it.

Piers, I very much doubt it will be signed. I have only ever seen one helmet that was similar (in fact a momonari kabuto) with a signature.

Agreed Ian. These Western kabuto were rarely signed and I've never seen or don't know of any signed eboshi in particular.

The loops for the shinobi-no-o look somewhat newer, as if it's been refurbished at some time. Uwe, you might be right. Still, I like the overall outside look of the shikoro. What is that matchstick connecting the shikoro to the hachi? Looks uncomfortable. Have the fukigaeshi been removed as Ian says, or did they never exist?

I still think the original owner should inform you as to the material(s) of the hachi, Ciro. It will be all iron (magnetic and heavy) or an iron hachi with some kind of lighter lacquered material above.

PS Point taken re Mei, Ian. I cannot imagine that it does have a signature, but it is always worth looking around inside.

Ciro,

As said Ian the eboshi or momonari kabuto are rarely signed older they are more rare are the signs mei... I've got a momonari and an aboshi kabuto signed both are nice but in the late edo period...

Nice golden eboshi here but difficult to date More photo necessaries..

The hachi seems iron because of the thickness but to be sure you can ask the seller to put a magnet, and really easy for the seller to take also a photo to confirm because the ukebari is already open in bad state..

You should be careful of the inside(hachi) kabuto.. When we zoom something looks strange look at the space!? Maybe another pothachi was add for a reinforcement, sometimes a seller in the past can add another second part iron hachi because the original hachi is in really bad state.. Be careful You will confirm easily with a full hachi photo I think..

Dear Ian,

Apologies for me asking, but you mentioned previously in the post a Momonari signed by Myochin Munechika. Do you remember where you saw it? I know one momonari signed by Yasuchika, but was curious about the one from Munechika. Would you have any picture?

Thank you in advance for your help.
