Hi

Can anyone tell me a little about my Suji Bachi Kabuto. When was it made / age and what are the different details on the  cabuto. Did it belong to a higher ranked samurai? Mon/crest......

Grateful for all answers.

Robert

Robert,  What you have is a russet lacquered suji kabuto of goshozan shape (higher at the back). I'm not sure how many plates it is made from since the apparent number is modelled with lacquer. On the wide front plate are two gilded shinodare, with one on each side (and probably on the back plate as well, but I cannot see). It is fitted for wakidate or side crests and on the front is a haraidate. Spaced around the bowl are the waisted four standing rivets, shiten no byo over gilded eyelets. It is fitted with an hineno style shikoro , lacquered to look like large scales, iyozane, and had very high quality gilded fukurin around the peak and fukigayeshi. As for age, the gilded fukurin are Edo period, so it has been re-furbished so it is difficult to say when the original bowl was made.

Robert, the kabuto is an edo product, the shinodare and broader plates on the sides are typical for that period. Probably Haruta school, or Odawara region.

Nice old style kabuto!

Robert !!

You have a very rare and expensive menpo by Zesai !

Zesai collectors will pay around 16.000 euro for this.

Well done what a fantastic menpo to match your  kabuto !

If you want to find more information about Zesai read Buroway"s book,

Thank you all for your information,

Its a suji bachi kabuto with 16 iron plates, it is a shinodare on back plate as well. Thank you Ian for your reply.

Thank you John i shall investigate more about the menpo by Zesai. What can i see that is typical in the work of Zesai.

the interesting part is the combination of the menpo with this kind of kabuto.  Zesai used this kind of shikoro and tare, bus not this kind of hachi.   if they are born together, then the kabuto dates from around 1700.

Dear Robert,

This is a very interesting kabuto-menpô set that was designed, as mentioned already, by Noguchi Zesai.

The mask features the peg (otayori) under the lower lip, sparse (pointed) teeth, yadome, the nagashi no ana is probably round, and there is most certainly a cushion on the inside part of the chin.

The helmet has shinodare, soft-matal shiten-no-byô of otayori shape, attachments for wakidate, there is probably red felt under the mabizashi (visor).

As Joe mentioned just above, the most recent publication on the subject is written by Mr Robert Burawoy. But please note that there is now a much more recent (2017), corrected and updated version of his book with full colour pictures available here:

(you can e-mail them as they understand English  info@deboccard.com)

Congratulations on your find !

Paul
