Katana Case Shi - Nihonto display cases

Recommended Posts

Came across a Japanese website selling beautiful display cases for nihonto and i thought of posting it up to share

https://en.katana-case-shi.com/

They are also having a limited time offer for the Desktop Tanto Display Case at 72k yen (usual price 90k yen). The offer is until the 5th of June Japan time.

I picked up one of the tanto cases myself and look forward to receiving it.

Prices for the larger cases are on the high side, but they look to be well made with a good lighting system and even the use lacquer for the base

Better than a $15,000 wooden case
Love the concept. Makes me think of designing something similar with hardened steel outer and bulletproof glass, with lighting and maybe humidity control.
In SA could be done for less than half that price. Would be amazing to display a really high end sword.

Brian, if you can organise it in SA to similar or better specs, that it will be very interesting. Bear in mind that is a very niche hobby so the volumes will not be flying off the shelves, and therefore organising a mass production line on this will not be worthwhile. I guess because this chum is making so few of these cases, and materials in Japan are expensive, his prices are so high. The craftsmanship looks high to me.

Francois, to your query about the blades inside..... well one could put anything they want in there..... even a gunto if it is precious to the owner. You just need to look at the residences in which these are placed to deduce the status of the owner. I have been inside some Japanese abodes, and these are not your “average” condo residences.

You could also browse the gallery and see what blades are stored there... there is a Yukimitsu tanto (probably Juyo, but that is just a guess looking at the quality and solid gold habaki), Horikawa Kunihiro, something that looks like a Nanbokucho tanto etc.

On the first hand like this minimalistic style, but for an everyday live it's a little bit cold. A museum touch, also shown on the blog..

Best

PS saw a Naotane somewhere in it's grave?

Regarding some of the blades in the gallery,  Horikawa Kunihiro (top left), Deiwa Daijo Kunimichi (top right), Yukimitsu (bottom left) and Naotane (bottom right).

He has some videos on youtube  too

Fantastic workmanship.  What a great way to show off a blade and know that it is safe from any stray person handling it.  I imagine you can lock the case to the wall or cabinet that it sits on.  Yes, it had better be a gorgeous blade with first rate mounts and horimono and cutting test!

drvac,

Can you take some shots of the dehumidifier setup on your case?

Best,

James

I'm looking at the sfdisplay cases, until I get a larger collection and will need more high end solutions they seem quite nice. Over $100 shipping to Norway per case but save raiding someone's estate it is all cheap looking acrylic cases available here.
