Next is an exquisite set of fuchigashira signed 'Hosono Sōzaemon kore o horu' (細野惣左衛門彫之)

Masamori's work often depicts themes from daily life which are usually crammed with villagers, fishermen, rickshaws, and processions. This particular set is more refined than a lot of his other work insofar as he uses space to accentuate the images. In this case, on the kashira there is a humourous theme of a monkey which has ascended to the top of the mast and which has captured the attention of the other passengers. On the fuchi is a much more sobering image of what appears to be a priest transporting a deceased man. This set of fuchigashira thus symbolises the vicissitudes of life, of comedy and tragedy in a single moment. Aside from the wonderful theme, the delicate execution of ke-bori is masterfully achieved and accentuated through the use of hira-zōgan in gold, silver, and copper.
