Photographing activities in blades

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

While on short leave I tried to capture some activities in my few newer blades... question for you people with skills in photography: how do you get the best results while capturing the hada/hamon and various activities in your blades? Below few shots on blades.

Thank you in advance!

Antti

Well, in the end it depends on the circumstances. If you are in a Museum or visiting a friend then you can use a mobile phone. But at home and nobody

near you, you have to use a camera. Otherwise you can try to win a Formula One Race with a Fiat Panda. Same result. Won´t work.

But there is another magic word: whisper, whisper = Photoshop! :)

I always use a tripond for the camera.

My Camera is a old Minolta Dimage F300 and  all pictures were taken in manual mode.

Exposure, shutter speeds can be set individually.

The pictures were taken in an absolutely dark room with only one light source.

A single spot, not a tube.

The light source should be adjustable.

Then you can either take pictures in the reflection or you light the blade at a flat angle.
This can prevent unwanted reflections.
Depending on what you want to show.
Sometimes less light is better than too much.
Two examples in the pictures.
It is the same blade with different lighting.

The rest is a matter of practice and patience.

That is sufficient for details ...... it is a completely different number to photograph the entire blade.

Edit : Ah ... almost forgotten: All pictures were taken without Photoshop!

Okay, don't use the mobile phone, got that.   But for those of us not familiar with brand names or cameras in general, could y'all differentiate between digital and analog cameras in these replies?

And, BTW, is one better than the other for this subject?

Nowadays everything is digital. Okay, there are some enthusiats out there who use film. But in the end: digital.

It is more ore less a discussion about using Photoshop or not. I am not one of those "one shot and be done with it" guys.

I use Photoshop. And the next question is: how much is okay?

Here are some examples: a Hirata tsuba before and after. Is it okay to cut it out? Is it okay to make a retouche?

It depends on what you want to do with those photos. Are they just for you? Will they be on a bookcover?

And a Gassan.

Any simple digital camera, no matter which brand is suitable to take such pictures.
It should only have a manual mode.
So exposure, shutter speed should be manually adjustable.

Thanks, Hawley.  Simple is what makes digital good. When you have manual settings, I'm lost.

I'm really struggling with macro photography. Might need a newer camera. Still using an old Olympus with 3.5 megapixels. It makes for smaller file sizes; but is probably outdated. Like me.

Hey, Antti, I didn't mean to step on your thread.   This subject has been discussed in previous threads… maybe try the search function. There's a lot of great stuff there.

One of the easiest tips was to use a black background.

One of the best things about digital is that you can try and try again.  Trial and error is an effective learning process. I'm getting real good at errors.

Welcome and Good Luck!
