School / Gold Menuki?

Recommended Posts

They seem pretty thin to me. And IMO not of high quality. I imagine they only weigh a few grams and I don't know if Menuki are solid gold or if silver is mixed in as well. So I would say there weight in gold +$ because they're menuki.

Agree with Logan - I have seen similiar menuki in Japan on sale for around 75.000 Yen. Therefore, be careful, Luis (all is not gold that glitters ;) - even though it may be gold in this case).

Thank you for your thoughts.

Those Menuki are pretty small 2 cm. Even if solid gold the mere metal value is probably not much. I am very undecided on the quality of the Menuki themselves and feel I'd rather pass on them.

I've actually analysed many Edo pieces and menuki are almost never pure gold in my experience. Very minor traces of copper, 1 or 2 percent, and silver, up to 50%, are usually alloyed in. Where they do look more rich in colour they may still contain a significant amount of gold because it was usual the leach any non gold alloy metal out of the surface to create a surface of pure gold.
