I am trying to date this blade. I can't figure out which Kuniyuki made it. I am also trying to figure out if it is worth the money to do a full polish and mount. Please help. I am new on here so bare with me.

Dear Brandon.

(In your profile please auto add your name to all your posts).  Given the three mekugi ana and assuming that the mei is original then your sword has at least had the machi moved up,  That is called machi okuri and is a way of shortening the blade length.  Given the current length then this would originally have been just into katana length and at or around 60 cms one might expect it to have been an uchigatana from 1500 to 1550.

Your decisions about restoration are complex.  In order to do this properly you will need to have it polished by a trained polisher, if you decide to do this then please ask for recommendations here as a poor polish will ruin the sword.  Is it worth it?  That depends on you, financially almost certainly not; you would most likely have to factor in the cost of polish and a new shirasaya, of and while you are about it papers.

Is it worth it in terms of the reward of seeing it fully restored and knowing that you have brought it back?  That is up to you.

It certainly is not worth having a new koshirae made for it though we have all felt the need to do this.  Polished, papered and in shirasaya would be the way to go.  If you really need to own a sword in koshirae then find one and buy it, possibly letting this one go to fund the purchase.

Interested to see the outcome if you do decide to have it properly restored, meanwhile enjoy your sword.

All the best.

Dear Geraint,

Thank you so much for responding to me. I appreciate any and all advice. Is it possible to tell which Kuniyuki made it. Also I have a tanto that i have been told might be worth spending the money on to have it restored. I would love to have feedback on it.

Looks like Mino work to me, and fairly late.   Maybe end of Muromachi, early Edo or thereabouts.  The blade has been polished a lot and is probably tired.  I would not invest in restoration of this one if it were mine.

You might consider putting a good bit of choji oil on it and letting it sit for a few weeks slathered in oil. Then with a clean rag remove the oil and lots of that rust will come off with the oil. Repeat

Nail-biters on the ha, more rust than you might think, & about $100/inch for a polish. Nope, keep the tanto for what it is, & look for better collectibles after you've spent time reading & studying.

Hi Brandon

The kuniyuki -  Boshi,  looks like it has had  some work done on it  ?  but the photo is not very clear , just my first impression , but I could be wrong .

also it is difficult to see,   there is very little evidence of the mune -machi  and ha-machi showing ,  again it just might be the poor photo of the tang  but if not,  it has had a lot

of polishing in the past  , and an old wives tale 2 character signature points maybe to a late koto  blade  , but again just an opinion ?

The Kuniyuki is signed tachi mei and if the signature is genuine it is a kodachi. I think the Kuniyuki is interesting piece, well worth further study.

Kaneyoshi is Mino like Robert said earlier.

i agree with Jussi that the Kuniyuki is the more interesting blade.  i would stare at the hamon and hada a lot and decide if it is interesting enough to hold your affection for any period of time.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one, unless your post is really relevant and adds to the topic..
