Rip monkey tsuba

Recommended Posts

Someone bought this tsuba on February 5th and on may 16th was sold pretty much dead for half the price.

How does that happen? Why? Was it mounted on a iato? But then again it seems really mistreated

Dear Jose.

The tsuba has been drilled to mount it and what about the extra large hitsu ana?  Ian has beaten me to the punch but to add the monkey looks as if at best it has been added to the tsuba, at worst it might even have been a spelter casting.  The whole thing looks as if it has been assembled for the late Meiji tourist market.

If this is so then the first buyer thought they were on to something and then discovered that they were not.

All the best.

I had one of those - these are quite well made, but they are post-Edo you can say art or you can say reproductions. Mine was actually better because the clothing was more detailed.

300$ is their going rate as far as I know.
