More Origamis Than Nihontos

THIS IS JUST A FUN THOUGHT FOR OPINIONS, NOT TAKEN TO CONDEMN SHINSA'S. NO ACCUSATIONS HERE. ARE THERE MORE ORIGAMIS THAN NIHONTOS? I'VE HAD TWO MUMEI NIHONTOS WITH FIVE ORIGAMIS? NOW BE GENTLE FELLOWS, I BRUISE EASILY.

If you don't agree with the opinion you ask someone else or even the same group a second time. The judges do change and after a number of years some blades will be forgotten.

I bought a whole collection and at least ten percent of the blades had two origami.  In most cases, one of the two was a green paper, now disregarded.

Hi Robert,

 

Actually, only Nihonto submitted to Shinsa can be counted for this query. Whether you have green, bright green, white or blue, there is a window of opportunity in resubmitting. In fact it is a good idea, especially on mumei blades. Also, if a collector or dealer buys your sword, they may get a better result.

Not sure what your point is Tom, as the window to get free shinsa for green papered blades is long past shut.  

To  answer Chris S. about whether the attributions were all the same, no often there were two different attributions, and the one on the green papers was better....

Maybe having something to do with the green origami scandal in the 1970s? Nihonto which had the green origami were allowed a free shinsa?

Yes, that is my understanding.  Due to the widespread recognition of the unreliability of the green papers (not all are wrong, just enough to besmirch the group), the NBTHK had an amnesty period in which green papered blades could be resubmitted for free shinsa to repaper them.  This, of course, was not very practical, especially for American collectors, so only some fraction of collectors availed themselves of the offer.  I suspect that on the whole, green papered blades that have been in the US for several decades have a higher percentage of correct attributions than do those that have always been in Japan, since resubmitting was much easier for Japanese collectors.  But that is just speculation.
