Minamoto Morinobu Gendaito In Gunto Koshirae

Nice example of a gendaito made as a Nambokucho utushimono, with long kissaki and wide mihaba. This is a gendaito by the Kongobyoe smith Minamoto Morinobu. He was a student of Moritaka (as was Tanigawa Moriyoshi) and lived in Futamura (the Ashikita district of Kumamoto prefecture). He was a Rikugun Jumei Tosho. 

 

This sword appears to be a copy of O-Kanemitsu. The hamon has areas which resemble the kataochi gunome hamon the smith was famous for. Other areas of the hamon are a rolling notare with ashi. The boshi also appears modeled on the textbook Kanemitsu boshi (midare-komi with a short turn-back resembling a candle flame). The jihada is a very tight ko-itame. The blade is 67cm and has a 3.3mm motohaba, which remains quite wide up to the yokote. It is rare to find a gendaito with this shape, having a long extended kissaki and very wide mihaba.

 

The sword comes with very nice shin-gunto koshirae. There is a Suya stamp on the tsuba. Suya was one of the finest makers of gunto koshirae and was the shop which made koshirae for Yasukuni-jinja. Please note in the photo there are different numbers on the tsuba, o-seppa and seppa.
