Ww 2 Fittings With Kanji

With Hurricane Olivia blowing thru the Islands,

I am looking at Nihonto .. 

 

I remember the seller told me there was "signatures" on the fittings.

Unless they are "Match marked" for re assembly?

Not maker marks..just to keep the set together during assembly, since they are hand fitted.

Image 1 looks like the Katakana Sa サ To ト Ra ラ    

 

Image 5 looks like the one associated with Kokura Arsenal.

Its not kanji and I think it is not "ra". I see it as a scratched SA TO U, as in, SATOU.

Do you suppose there was a Lt Sato in the IJA?

Hi Peter.,

 

Good point, I thought at first it might be Hiragana which would make sense of Se To U, which was my first reading, but look at the stroke directions for Sa/Se ,  I feel it is Katakana, not a mixture of both.

This is  a WW II Officer's/Gentleman's Sword, was refitted at  Kokura Arsenal *

by a Gentleman/Craftsman Satou -san or Satora-san**

The blade is not a WW II Blade.

So, I "assume", that "it is what it is"..
