I am at the verge of buying the Haynes Index, that all the tsuba guys quote often.

 

Is it just a refrence book with artist names, or does it also have pictures and examples to compare with.

I still need to get it myself (it's shipping that's a killer I think) but from what I understand, it is just info and dates. No pics or examples. Strictly for looking up names and basic info.

With 12,560 entries, Haynes' compilation of documented tosgou artisans is the most comprehensive in any language. This index, the result of five decades study, presents readily accessible information for each entry. Biographical information includes: name(s) alphabetized by its Romanji transliteration accompanied by the kanji, kakihan if used, period and location active, account of associations family/school, and a listing of sources of authentic signatures for each entry. The primary reference being Wakayama's Toso Kodogu Meiji Taikei. The index is followed by an listing of kanji presented by stroke count, and a bibliography of western and Japanese texts cited. The three volume set is made a ready reference in its custom book stand.

Any thoughts a an all around good book with picture refrences? To go with it ?

Rick, another great thing with Haynes is that it also comes with a diskette version which is great for word searching artists which can be very useful especially when an artist used more than one name during his lifetime.

 

Best money I have ever spent on research material.

 

For pictures / general school info I would recommend the Baur collection.

I didnt know a CD came with it...thats a nice plus

 

And thanks for steering me towards the Baur book also, time to start shopping.

Hello Rick,

 

The primary reference cited for signature examples in the Haynes' Index is Wakayama's Toso Kodogu Meiji Taikei.

 

Toso Kodogu Meiji Taikei is a comprehensive, three volume compilation of actual tsuba-ko signatures, a meikan. Highly regarded by Haynes and others, I recall seeing the set in use at the 2006 NTHK Shinsa in New Jersey.

 

The sets typically sell to our want list before posting to our website.
