New Koshirae

Made by Brian Tschernega from a nice set of fittings. The tanto going in this is a signed Kagemitsu. Son of Nagamitsu and father of Kanemitsu.

I thought I would share the nice work. Had to agonize over a lot of choices. What to do on lacquer. To wrap or not to wrap. Brian made the extra gold touches for the mekugi and the elements that hold the kashira in place (I realize I don't know the term for these, someone want to venture it?) I chose to have them made and went with no wrap because I didn't want to detract from the metalwork or hide the menuki... and in the end bouncing it off of Ted decided just on simple black lacquer to let the fittings do the talking.

The tanto is equally nice and it will be a good set. Just have to trim the sageo on a bit.

Fittings are Kyo Kinko which is the NBTHK punting the ball a bit but the kozuka reminds me of Umetada with the striping. The Kiri is set in there free floating

Sometimes stuff is a lot nicer out of the box and seeing them as the fittings maker intended them to be seen is just extremely satisfying. I feel like a 400 year old man somewhere is nodding and saying thanks for finishing it.

Year long projects to find the right blade and right fittings and getting it made, but very satisfying when they come together.
