Nara-Gatana Tanto In Nice Mountings. Edo Period.

Another one I picked up recently.

Beautiful mountings.

The ITO wrap is traditional, along with the single cord type ITO wrap, wrapped with it together.

I love it when I can find original ITO wrapping with cord also.

The temper line is suguha temper pattern and has deep temper at the point.

The forging grain is itame-hada, no opening, no blister and in good condition.

The scabbard urushi lacquered wood scabbard, shows minor lacquer loss but no dent, no crack and in good condition.

Tsuba is mokko shape soft metal tsuba.

It measures 7+7/8" cutting edge, 21mm width, 2 mm thickness at the notch and 15" in mountings.

I'm trying to rebuild my collection, it will take some time.

The blade is MUMEI, hirazukuri shape.

Hirazukuri shape, Edo period, Early 1800'S.

Yes, I agree the red rust is not good, should be black rust.

It all fits perfectly, and seems original with the exception it does seem that may be that the Tsuba might have been replaced.

It looks like someone in the past tried to use some type of chemical to remove some of the surface black rut to see if it was signed.

I'm by far an expert, but it looks and feels really good.

The Tsuba, I do like on it though.

I can post better pics of the Tsuba only tomorrow if that helps..

You posted your reply in the wrong thread.

Yes, I'm thinking it's some sort of prop for the movies or stage, or possibly a late export piece.

At 2mm thick, you have to question its utility. Regular tanto are 6-7mm and yoroi-doshi 8-10mm(approximate sizes).

The pieces pictured in the thread I linked to display similar thin blades and tsuba-ana which makes me think this is something along those lines.
