Hi,

 

Right is Kato Masakuni/Sanekuni(真国)(real name Kato Matazo) in 1934 at Tokyo.He wore  white beard.

He's seeing Ken-sword that he made.
Left is maybe Kato Sukekuni(祐国).

Notice the attention paid to finishing the nakago-all the Kato smiths were first rate craftsman. This sword would look a lot better with a real polish...

The one he's seeing is a Ken-sword he presents to Imperial Household in 1934.

AAARGH! I was just thinking how nice it was to see a hamon instead one of those awful hadori frosty wavy thingies.

 

Seriously Chris, i can see why you like the Kato smiths. Is this Sanekuni the one that should? be read Masakuni?

 

I agree with you on the preference for a neatly finished nakago...I had the chance to buy a quite good RJT blade a couple of weekends ago (by Miwa Kanetomo of Seki , pupil of Kojima Kanemichi) but couldn't bring myself to buy as it had an awful "Seki" style mei ...almost like a nakarishimei).
