echizento Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 I first thought this was Fudo Myo but now I'm not sure looks like too many strokes to be that. Sorry for the bad image. Quote
Gabriel L Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 I think at least one of the two is indeed Fudo Myoo… photo makes is a bit blurry and the quality of the engraving does not seem high, though. And BTW it's Sanskrit, not "sand script." More specifically, it is Siddhaṃ. Quote
echizento Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 Thanks for the info and correction. I realized after I posted it that I spelled it wrong, old age creeping in. I'll see if I can post a better picture. Quote
echizento Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 Here is a little cleared image about the best I can get it. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Hi Ron, The characters are known in Japan as Bonji which is Siddham script, a variation for want of a better word of Sanskrit. Here's a link to the Siddham alphabet and variations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siddha%E1%B9%83_alphabet I have read that Bonji inscriptions sometimes contain the first syllable of an invocation to a Warrior deity and the second represents the last syllable of that invocation. Like a protective shorthand. Cheers Quote
ancientnoob Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Ron, The cross cultural influnece on this piece is amazing. The fact that the Sanskrit envokes the protection of the warrior is just cool in every regard. Great, Now I want one. This thread certainly made me go through my books and look at the different types of Horimono. Just Neat-o. Quote
echizento Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 I would like to edit out my other images but I don't know how to do that. I'm going to try one last time hopefully this is a clearer image. Quote
