DOH1006 Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 Hi, I'm looking for specific information for a forging project I just started. My 'Forging Master' is pretty adamant about doing thorough research for this so I dove in deep in the world of Nihonto. I chose to make a replica of a blade from Shodai Echizen Yasustsugu because I like the irony of replicating something created by the 'master of replicating' (utushi-mono). Now, I did find some very nice specifics of his katana's but I'm really looking for al the measurements of one of his wakizashi's that are created around the time he moved to Edo (1603). This regards all information on measurements, sugata, hamon, boshi, etc. He switched Mei during that time. Enclosed you'll find the URL to a site that has a list of his Mei. http://www.nihonto.com/abtartyasutsugu.html Can somebody help me out? Thanks, Marten Quote
DOH1006 Posted May 18, 2014 Author Report Posted May 18, 2014 @Chris Thank you for your quick reply. A beautiful Tanto with the Boshi I love. I'll inspect that website for some additional information. Keep it coming! Kind regards, Marten Quote
Fuuten Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 Hi there, I can't give you any specific information because I'm not familiar with the smith and his work. However what struck me is that what you might want to look into is the things the shodai was interested in (the smiths he liked and why), and also, what the main difference in the periods of existence were. So you can get a better understanding of why and how this specific smith worked (or at least can create your image for this project). And to finish, please keep us updated on your project, i would be interested in seeing your work. Quote
DOH1006 Posted May 29, 2014 Author Report Posted May 29, 2014 @Axel Thanks for your advise but since I wasn't able to get any specific info on wakazashi from Shodai Yasutsugu I decided to go back to my original plan which was to forge one of his katana's. Enclosed you'll find an overview of my project. Interesting part is that I'm going to use folded steel which is a mixture of today's steel and steel from the 16th century. Keep my fingers crossed for this! 20140527 Design Katana v2.pdf Quote
