Recommended Posts

hi all, have not been on for a long while.

i just came back from my first visit to the nbthk sword museum. in their little book section i saw the connoisseurs book for sale for 9100 yen which is slightly less than $90.

they have other books worth noting. i picked up a kiyomaro taikan for a very good price.

Hi, guys,

Just want to make a little update for this thread. Does anyone find any new interesting offer for this book?

Please let us know if anybody got it for a interesting price.

Thank you

I might be listing a copy here soon but I'm not sure how interesting the price will be, certainly better than $300-$600 which is just ridiculous.

may i ask-

what shall be that special on this publication?

this book is far away to be "that good" so to ask such an ridiculous price!

remind that the official price was around 40.-Euro!

had it once mineself, and i just can tell you that this book shows nice drawings-that´s but all in fact...(the written info is just marginale if you seek for Kanteipoints)

buy you the excellent-and much more informative and better books-from Markus instead!

+ maybe the Nihon To Koza series....and you have everything you need...

further specialised literature will follow certainly,as long you know finally, into which direction you head in your´s blades...

i really have to wonder....but well?

Christian I think the reason why this book has been so popular is the fact that a lot of information could be had in compact package for somewhere around 50-80€'s in this book. I agree that the prices on this book have gotten too high for my taste.

I would rather recommend a book that has c. 350 pages and can be bought for less than 100 euros to a someone starting out with books than a set of Nihonto Koza or Yamanaka Newsletters. I think it's written in good format so that it's more easier to grasp "basic" things than reading Yamanaka or Nihonto Koza early on. Connoisseurs book has been great easing between the introductory books and more advanced books as it builds your knowledge up. Of course once your start getting deeper into reading material and acquire more books I think you will use this book less but it's still a great resource.

And as it could be ordered from Amazon for a good price it was pretty killer deal.

Get in touch with Grey, best Nihonto books seller, he may have you a copy :

http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.c ... word-Books

He had one for $175 but I think he sold it not long ago. Was the best price around (he usually is  ) but that one for £100 is a good deal for anyone looking unless postage is too much.

in terms of books connoisseur's is the one I've used the most so far in my short time as it provides a good introduction to everything. I'd still recommend it as the first book anyone starting out gets before moving onto Markus's book/Hawley's, Fujishiro and Nihon to koza. Then maybe Nihonto Taikan if you can afford it before choosing books you'd like to specialize in. With those 5 I can't see you needing anything else really, maybe Nihonto Zuikan.

Hi All,

A bit shocked at the prices now for this book , should have brought more when I got mine.

Just checked my Amazon account and I brought my hard cover copy back in 2011 for a whopping $66 usd including postage to New Zealand and we are at the bottom of the world.

Packed away at the moment due to other projects but is as in new condition and a keeper. :)

Okay, I just submitted another order for this book to Arawaza. As a test. Yes, I am crazy. Their website did not say that it was out of stock, but that has yet to be proven. Perhaps their website does not update stock in real time. If this book is indeed still in stock and it is shipped to me, I will let you know.

If some of you guys ignored my recommendation to buy from them, and if it is still indeed in stock, then that is your problem.

The price was $105 CDN plus about $20 for shipping (within Canada). That works out to about $117 USD. I am sure that they would charge just a bit more for shipping to the U.S.

If I do receive this second book, and if it is perchance their last copy, then I will be prepared to sell it for the exorbitant sum of $600 (shipping anywhere in the world included) to one lucky buyer. Just kidding! I will be prepared to send it to someone who agrees to buy it at my cost plus shipping to their destination.

Please wait before you attempt to submit an order to them. Once I have confirmation that my book is being shipped, I will let you know if the light is green.

Just buy yours. If you want to make profit with books, start a book business. Earn 50 usd to resell one book is hard to understand while you can :

- let the other people to get a chance to have the Connoisseur's at a reasonable price.

- let the real nihonto books seller as Grey, or arazawa in this case, selling this book at a reasonable price too. Nobody will pay amazon prices and believe so is not really nice to our community of nihonto enthusiasts.

At least, that's what i'm thinking.

BTW, the light is green, I received mine some days ago.

Gentlemen

I think that it is important to remember that this book was translated from Token Kantei Dokuhon which was designed as an aid to Kantei. It happens to be packed with much basic info that is of use to both the beginner and more advanced student. I particularly like Nagayama sensei's individualistic oshigata. These are not oshigata of actual swords but serve to illustrate certain features of particular schools and swordsmiths (I actually have some originals).

As I assisted in the production of this book and wrote the Intro, I was fortunate in receiving a complimentary copy from Kodansha. Whilst I can see that there seems to be a great variety of prices being charged for second hand copies, these prices pale into insignificance when compared to the price of swords and so, comparitively speaking, they are inexpensive. Whilst I appreciate that collectors want their references at as keen a price as possible, it seems churlish not to buy it when you need it, at whatever price you can.

I apologise if I repeat anything already mentioned (I have been out of touch with the NMB for a few months)

Regards

RED LIGHT, now. All gone.

I received an email from Diane at Arawaza today that the book was no longer in stock, so I asked her to cancel my order. Sorry guys, if I got your hopes up for nothing.
