Exhibited Shigetsugu Japanese sword katana sale Ebay

Recommended Posts

I remembered reading in a war era publication about Shigetsugu receiving an order from a university professor in the Art Faculty of Nihon University, where I happened to be teaching at the time, for a presentation blade for Hitler. At the time, I wondered where it possibly could have ended up and wondered if I should find it, would it be something I would want....

About 5 years later I was at Kenji MIshinsa's vacation home in the Hakone mountains when he pulled a fax sheet off the table and said "what do you think of this?" One look and my jaw dropped! I told him I had read about this sword in a war time publication and had been keeping an eye out for it since! Clive and sent the oshigata to Mishina san for a translation as he wasn't sure what ヒットラー meant! I am sure Clive was quite surprised when Mishina san replied! It solved a long running mystery for me...

The one thing I have always wondered is whether or not it actually ever made it to Hitler....

Probably. I would guess it would be mounted with elaborate koshirae. One would imagine exchanging gifts between Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan goes on frequently much like bankers and politicians do today.

Though anything shiney would have ended up in Goering's private collection

There was at least one other sword made for presentation to Hitler that was in elaborate tachi koshirae. It was one of two made for presentation to Hitler and one other top Nazi. They were commissioned by Toyama Mitsuru, the right wing leader, and made in the Kurihara Akihide forge. I have pictures of Toyama sitting between them.
