On one of my swords, the oil doesn't "smear" or spread, but actually beads up. Overall, I am not all that concerned by this, but I am a bit worried the beads could dry and stain the blade like waterspots on a car after rain. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? If you proceed as given by the Japanese recommendations, there ist no danger. You clean the blade first, then apply A SMALL AMOUNT of oil and disperse it thoroughly on the surface, then remove all oil again prior to putting the blade back in the scabbard. Leaving oil on the surface (oil does not 'dry', but in most cases it will harden earlier or later, a polymerisation process) leads to dust sticking to the surface (which will cause scratches as you move the blade) and getting into the wood of the SAYA, thus preventing it to take up moisture. Preventing rust means keeping the blade dry. Quote

Have seen it before, and usually caused by a residue fo some oil or gun treatment. best way to prevent it is a proper cleaning as recommended using pure alchohol, and/or uchiko afterwards (used properly, lightly and sparingly) to make sure there is no residue. I hadn't thought of gun cleaner/oil to cause this, but make some sense here. I have cleaned it twice in a month just because I have been paranoid about the oil drying and leaving a spot. Quote
