  1. Hey guys, Posting this for a friend who is not tech savvy. He wants to know who this smith is. He believes it to be a gendai smith by the name of Okano Mitsuhiro. I attempted to look them up and found nothing. Anyone got a lead on this smith or has he discovered one that's fallen out of the meikan? Also, what kamon is that? It appears to be cast into the piece, rather than attached like a usual one. 27" nagasa with an attractive sanbonsugi hamon. Very minty Type 98 mounts. Thanks!
  2. Hello. I would appreciate anyone's help with the translation of this katana. Thank you in advance. --Matt
  3. I have a friend and fellow ITK member here by the name of Jim Tobin. He is not very tech savvy and has asked me to post this here on his behalf for a translation. Any opinions/translations are welcome. I believe the blade is a WWII blade judging by how chippy and rushed the signature looks. This is unfortunately the only picture he was able to get me. Thanks guys! ~Chris
  4. I just purchased a katana with a sayagaki and a very old origami. I want to have them translated into a document with the kanji, transliteration, and translation. I know this is more than a simple mei translation, so I am seeking someone to do this for a reasonable fee. Is anyone on the forum offering this service, or can anyone recommend someone to do this for me? The sayagaki covers both sides of the saya, and the origami is quite old with very stylized calligraphy. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
  5. Looking for blade kanji translation help on a dirk owned by Admiral Nishizo Tsukahara. I can see the kanji for 'gift' as the third character. Asking for help with the first two kanji. Thank you! --Matt
  6. Could someone please help me with more info on this sword
  7. Just acquired a new nihonto, but can not identify what the kanji says. Its located on the other side from Mei, might be the date Could someone assist? Any help is appreciated!
  8. Dear all, if you can help me on this one, I will appreciate a lot. It is a sword made by KANENORI. I will need the full translation of that page. Thanks a lot for your active help
  9. Hello hello, So happy to find this forum - So much knowlege in one place. I have inherited what appears to be a relitively old Wakizashi. I have tried my best to mess about in photoshop to try bring out the detail but it is very difficult. Would anyone be willing and able to help me out. This is my atempt so far; Side A: 年 ..... [Toshi (Chika)?] Side B: 日本 ....... [Nihon] I will update if I find out more of its history into the family. I will be looking into getting someone UK (Scotland) baced to "clean/restore" it if anyone has some suggestions that would be super helpful. Many thanks in advance, Dave.
  10. Hello, I recently uploaded a photo of my kozuka blade that I bought from a flea market, but obviously no one could give information with only one photo. So now I’m uploading better photos. There is a writing on the blade which I can’t read as well. My questions are: when was it made? By whom? And should I restore the gold that has worn off from the handle? Thank you.
  11. Hello gentleman and ladies. Wonder if I could get some help with the date on this tanto? Would appreciate any assistance. Thank you. --Matt
  12. Wondering if I could please get some help translating this sayagaki by Tanobe sensei? I know the photos aren’t the best—I have already consigned the sword to an auction house, and I don’t seem to have taken any photos myself. So hopefully someone can make out the translation with screenshot photos of the auction house’s listing. Thank you so much if you can help! —Matt
  13. Hey Guys, any tips on making a difficult-to-see mei pop more safely? I tried getting decent pics but even in person, I have trouble picking it out. Also, any translation assistance would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if the mei is original or not. Thanks in advance!
  14. Greetings. Long time lurker and first time poster here. I was hoping somebody might have some insight on a signature. My partners extended family are cleaning the family property and in one of the old sheds is a Katana their father reportedly brought back from the cleanup in Nagasaki. I was asked to have a look because I have an interest in such weapons however my expertise is mainly in modern practical blades. (I wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity though) It’s in terrible condition so I didn’t want to mess with the tang too much but these 3 characters appear to be the only identifying marks visible. I believe the characters are: 安浦刀 I recognise the third character as “sword” which I found odd. After some research I was able to find the name or location of “Yasuura” for the first two characters but my Japanese is extremely rusty. Thank you for your time.
  15. Great grandfather took this back from Japan after WW2. There is a small symbol on the upper handle. Also a faded symbol on the bottom made with red paint.
  16. Dear NMB fellowship, I am again in need of your guiding hands on the subject of either confirmation or possible correction of and earlier translation of Mei. This time a very nice iron Tsuba I recently acquired from an esteemed NMB member. Design: Iron Mokko Gata Tsuba with Phoenix bird and Paulownia (the Phoenix bird was adopted in Japan as a symbol of the imperial household - especially the empress. Measurements 8,3 x 7,8 x 5 mm. Former Mei translation: “Higo Tadamasa Bishu Josai” - made by Tadamasa from Higo school (Edo Higo) in Josai district of Owari province. No records found so far on who he was. Mei is made in nunome zogan inlay in gold, and have the feeling of being genuine ( but - I might be wrong). I would therefore very much appreciate: translation / confirmation or correction of the former translation of the Mei Your thoughts and knowledge concerning the maker of this Tsuba (should you have any) Best regards Soren
  17. Hello. If someone would happen to have a minute to read this flag, I would really appreciate it. Thank you! --Matt
  18. I was advised to show this signature to this group. I am hopeful someone will have some answers or any information at all. Thank you.
  19. Hello folks! I've got a katana a friend here needs a translation/ID for. I believe it to be mid-late 1800's but I could be very wrong. Its numbers: Nagasa: 29.25 inches Sori: 0.75 inch Nakago: 9 inches Height at yokote: 0.875 inch Hamon appears bright and attractive, the hada is indistinct. Appears to have osaka-yakidashi with nice kaeri on the boshi. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking:
  20. I know that the sayagaki typically has the mei, dimensions, and the appraiser/owner but mine doesn't seem to line up with the nakago so I don't believe it has the mei, and was curious on what it does have. I took a shot at it with google translate with no luck. Any help would be appreciated!
  21. This is cross posted to get translation and detailed information, perhaps Smith, family name, and geography of origin. This was passed down to me when my father died. He acquired it sometime between 1944 and 1961.
  22. This sword was given to my father either in WWII or Korea. Im hoping to identify the family name, smith, and any history of this sword.
