    This is very interesting. It is not very often that this style of Kyu Gunto actually has a handmade blade. Usually, machine made. Nice piece!

    Not to spark up a debate about something, but never say never - or always for that mater. First, a seki stamp does not always mean a machine made blade. There is a good chance you have a showa-to blade, but you may have gendaito. Although it is difficult to tell from the single photo (for me anyway). Let the disagreements begin! Also, if you have more pics, I would love to see them.

    All, A while back I asked for assistance for sayagaki translation. When Larry took a look at the Kanehiro, he said that it may be a blade entered for competition. I didn't ask or post a marking on the shirasaya's tsuka, but could someone take a look and see if they can translate it? Thanks again for the help!

    All, Stupid question - well maybe more to the point, someone else is stupid and I have to fix it. Someone let oil harden between the blade and the habaki. How do I remove the oil without damaging the blade? Thanks!

    Grrr.... If only I had $20K to spend - I would buy the Shodai Ujifusa in a heartbeat. That thing is beautiful! I think I'll go start buying lotto tickets and one day it will be mine - oh yes, it will be mine.

    Very nice indeed. I have a stupid question though. Is it possible to polish the side with etchings? I think I know that a person shouldn't, but never owned one. Thanks for sharing.

    Absolutely - even if the blade would have sold with out any fittings, still a good price. Well done to who ever bought the blade.

    I am not sure if you bought this or not, since the bidding ended. The saya is either a fake or it has been painted black - not normal for this type of sword. Additionally the top spacer on the tsuba is chrome... also not normal. The blade seems fine for the photos, but the non-standard variations to the fittings alone make them suspect.

    Questions about the blade aside, this is one of the best looking shin-gunto's I have seen. My only concern would be the leather saya cover. I haven't seen them with ties - maybe repro? Other than that it is BEAUTIFUL.

    Thank you Koichi, I appreciate the help. Before I ask, I try to get as close as frustration will allow. Thanks for helping me when I wasn't able to at least give it a go on my own.

    Actually, this is one heck of a deal! These were Kamikaze blades, so first they are obviously very rare - not many can be salvaged from a pile of burning plane wreckage. Secondly, most of these were machine made, but this is a handmade piece. Certainly not of the same quality as a lot of the stuff I have seen other board members collect, but for militaria collectors, like myself, this is a very nice piece. I was "the other" bidder. Kind of kicking myself for not pushing it a bit further.
