    Jonathan,

this could be an amateur attempt to build a bow in Japanese style. The form is not correct (too straight), and it is way too short for traditional KYUDO. Shortest standard YUMI are about 212 cm long. Perhaps for a child?

it seems pretty well done for an amateur job. Also it takes a a lot of strength to string up. I suspect a child couldn’t do it.

  2. I bought this old bamboo bow a while back and was wanting to learn more about it.
It’s 68” long and appears to be made from three layers of bamboo.
It appears to be a Japanese yumi bow. That becomes even more obvious with the word “yumi” carved into the wood. This is aspect has confused me the most and is pictured.

Can anyone help tell me more about this?

Btw, this is a mitsumune which often indicates something interesting. Please don't do anything at all to clean the rust on either of your new purchases and hold them until a professional polisher can evaluate for restorability.

I’ve only taken 99% alcohol and a rag to the blade (not the nagako). This is acceptable right?

  4. This is my first tanto. In a lot rougher shape than my previous blade posted and is mumei.

I’ve never had a blade that was so thick. I believe it is a yoroi-doshi.

can anyone confirm? Anyone have any idea what time period it’s from?

    thanks I’m advanced.

    Sori length- 12.5 inches

    tip to mune-machi - 7.5 inches

As I said in your previous post this is a very Soshu looking blade (irrespective of the mei). If this isn't a kodai Hiromi, then it still may be along the same lines of Sue-Soshu / Shimada.

Would this be worth polishing and going through Shinsa?

  6. Hello this is one of two blades I recently purchased at an auction. I was hoping to get some of y’all’s opinions on it.

Despite my best attempts I was unable to get a good photo of the hamon, but I will include what I have.

The hamon appears to be Choji-midare (my best guess).

The blade appears flat without shinogi.

Koshirae is in rough shape but is decorated with the Kamon of the Toyatomi clan.

Please forgive me as I haven’t studied nihonto in a while and forgot many of the Japanese terms.

    Sori length- 16.5 inches

    Tip to Mune- machi- 12.5”

looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts if they feel included to comment.

    thank you.

It may be gimei of the famous Masamune student, but please note that there were later generation Soshu Hiromitsu. I would suggest shinsa to get a more firm answer. Regardless of the mei, this has a convincingly Soshu nakago.

Thank you Ray. I really appreciate it. I will try to post more images tonight in the nihonto section. From what I’ve seen so far, I will say that it is either a KO wakizashi or O Tanto. The hamon appears to be choji like. Nevertheless I hope to learn more tonight once I post the whole thing.

  8. Hello NMB friends.

been out the nihonto game for a while but recently picked up two blades at auction.

is the mei decipherable or am I gonna have to go pick up some flour from the store?

appears to be 6 kanji. So far I have ? 州住?光?

    looking forward to the replies.

    thanks in advance.

Ok, so that at least opens the possibility this was traditionally made.  If you want to pursue that track, the guys will need some good, clear close-ups of a few sections of the blade showing skin/hamon details.

Probably too much rust to get an accurate Kantei at the moment. There does seem to be a choji mlidare hamon peeking through the rust.
