  1. I agree, a WWII water quenched plain steel dagger, made in the untold 1000's during and after the war and IMO a nice clean one for sure.
  2. Nice sword, i would not clean anything myself, cleaning the metal will take the patina away, i have cleaned same with a toothbrush warm water and a small drop of soap, wipe of the water right away with a dry cloth, but i don't think you really need it here.
  3. Here is a picture he had up earlier of the nakago. Sorry i see the same picture.
  4. I love yours Jon, here is mine.
  5. Don't forget about the shipping as well, i would ask before i bid, could be as much as $200 for a signal item if i remember correctly from past auctions? BTW i agree some really nice pieces for sale for sure.
  6. I just hit 60 last month and because of Richard Stein's great site The Japanese Sword Index, i found my way here and i now know how to tell a real Nihonto from a plain steel sword, after many years of buying swords i had no real idea what i was doing before, i bought swords on looks mainly, books alone didn't do it for me, reading many threads here with pictures did the trick thank the gods and all the members here! Cheers!
  7. Yes Joe, stop kicking yourself, in fact buy yourself a good lunch today instead. LOL hehe I have a few just like it i bought over the years, i believe it is just a Airuchi made at the turn of the 19th century, i agree with Brian, $600 is very pricey indeed.

    NOTCH on tang

I have seen a lot of notch's on blades as well and i would bet the farm if i was a betting man your right on the money above Brian.
  9. Just under $20,000 seems to be the going price these days, i see Aoi-Art Muramasa Tanto is still on hold. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0343864272
  10. We all understand that for sure i believe, chalk it up to passion, but you have to excuse my enthusiasm for waiting, i have many swords i wish i waited on, buying without knowing squat is a poor way to learn with a site like this that can help new buyers before they leap into the abyss. hehe
  11. I am glad to see your going to wait Mike, you really should learn how to tell the difference between Nihonto and plain steel made swords first, then you can learn what you like yourself. I still have the first book i bought on Nihonto, The Samurai Sword by John M. Yumoto, a great first book IMO, wait a minute i see you already are asking about it, i would get one in good shape as cheap as i could. BTW I agree The Connoisseur's Book of Japanese Swords by Nakayama Kokan is a must have.
  12. Take your time is most important, learn more here first, here is a nice first sword from a know top dealer, but don't be in a hurry, haste makes waste. BTW i am waiting to get a sword from Aoi Art right now, a great guy to deal with, his price posted covers shipping and insurance and no fee for Paypal. http://www.aoi-art.com/sword/katana/08552.html
  13. Great gift, killer blade, i would get a new Habaki made as well, the one it has is not good enough IMO, i would get a silver one myself. Can't wait to see it when you get it back Robert. James
  14. I was going to bid on this one, beautiful sword, but after seeing past sales over $14,000 for ones like it, i decided not to bid since i 'm no expert, all i could think was, it might be too good to be true? The seller sent me many pictures, everything looked great to me, but all i could think minutes before it ended was, too cheap to be true? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... otohosting
  15. Here's one to watch IMO, very clean, it even has Hada. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0365485731
  16. Your very welcome Weidas, i bit my tongue when i saw someone bid on the first one. You have to be very careful when looking for a real one, most were made after the war to sell to the GI's.
  17. Number one is a copy made by Hanwei in the 90's i believe, i remember the marked Habaki. The other two are doubtful IMO as well.

    Saya fittings

Not all the same, 25mm to 60mm in most cases. James
  19. Thanks guys, i thought about my question right after i posted it and came up with some of the answers here, if you can not see the blade closeup, you can't know what your getting indeed. I have learned a lot here, i would have not bought haft of the swords i have gotten over the last few years if i came here sooner, heck i didn't really know what Hada and Hataraki were.
  20. I was watching this, i missed it at the Now it Now price, the seller added it late last night, did i miss a deal? I know the pictures of the blade are not very good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0355025338
  21. Here's one he sold in his feedback, blade only like the one above, i sure wish i knew the buyer? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0289308833
  22. Fake or Treasure, not fake as far as i can tell. i think we would need better pictures of the whole blade to tell if it is a treasure? The saya writing looks unreadable to me, reminds me of my own third grade scribal? hehe
  23. Looks like a new way to screw Ebay to me? Here's a to if so? hehe
