  1. I think it's cool. Better than being discarded I think. I was thinking about using a really beat up 11th century Viking sword that no-one wanted by cleaning it up cutting it into menuki sized pieces and using for modern made tsuka menuki. Hurts to think about it but better than being recycled into a iPod
  2. You know I thought it was maple leaves at first as well but then upon closer inspection I'm not so sure. Our ancestors have been smoking medicinally for thousands of years so wouldn't surprise me. They found solid gold Scythian opium and cannabis dispenser that's roughly 2000 years old. So maybe this samurai had a hemp farm empire? Ropes cloth paper medical etc... But anyways you're both probably right and I'm not too serious about this so please don't take anything personal. Whether Japanese maple or cannabis the resemblance is pretty close haha D
  3. Very good. Its little bits of good information such as this that really helps me form opinions. Thank you I agree about length and I did find it a little short so I assumed it was o-suriage. I didn't do much actual research on this specific blade as I was just interested in the tsuba and I always take what is written on eBay with a grain of salt and I basically look at blade and then research for many days and weeks to form somewhat of an opinion. I think you are totally correct I wouldn't buy that sword as I was just bringing some humor into the thread. Well I would buy it but not for that price haha. D
  4. You're speaking my language ???? Originally that's what I was thinking as well. They must have really liked that tsuba. Pretty amazing Is it just me tho or is there a diagonal zone/blemish under habaki(area) ? D
  5. Notice the indentations on sides? Just wondering others opinions. Thanks D
  6. This samurai said it helps him concentrate better during duels https://nihontoart.com/shop/muromachi-period-katana-signed-bishu-osafune-sukesada/
  7. If you click on the pics it opens the volume for reading EDIT: I get what you mean now lol it's in Japanese haha
  8. I understand but he puts "has some cracks" even on hozon paper swords. Even when I've asked him if the sword has hagire or fatal flaw he says no. So I think he's confusing the term "crack" with a general term for damage. What I'm asking is what made that particular item such a bad deal other than price for the age. He's already mentioned in a PM that there is no hagire. So obviously in this case the term isn't self explanatory. No offense. I can see the damage that was mentioned but is it fatal was another question. I didn't have any questions on the definition of "crack". Just wondering if what is viewed on that sword for its age is fatal and makes it totally worthless or is that up to personal opinion. Also if it was just a large ware or fukure. But that might be getting off topic for this section. Thanks ???? D
  9. Wow! That's the same sword? How much does a good polish usually cost?
  10. Thank you! That is the listing with the tsuba from the OP. Yes the maki on saya. I notice some disintegrating on the sides close to the metal but I was looking towards the center of maki. But now that you mention it i can see what you're saying. My mind likes to paint a very pretty picture sometimes! I notice this seller puts "there are cracks" on all his listings. I've asked if it has hagire or fatal flaws when I see that "it has cracks" and he says no but you say the long crack close to ha is fatal and would make the sword worthless? I thought maybe it was ware or fukure? Or damage from battle/blocking? I was thinking since it was nanbokucho that maybe the age would allow for some flaws? Thank you for the info! But yes I would not pay that much for that item D
  11. Totally. A new tanto I just bought actually has the far left Mon on it's koshirae and kogatana blade and kozuka. I really like how you set them up tho! Very nice display
  12. Actually I almost did that. I passed up a really nice bring back tanto that was dated to 14 century because of no polish and almost bought something new that was labeled as something old just because it had a nice polish but after reading I started noticing the different subtleties and passed. I spent a little over $500 for the Edo Wakizashi which I feel comfortable with. It is actually made very well and has a "cormarant(sp) birds neck" mune. The blade is a little tired and has some small blemishes but nothing major and no rust. Plus the thing is still razor sharp. The kogatana is still razor sharp too lol https://flic.kr/p/29Vfbww https://flic.kr/p/29Vfbxo
  13. Yes true I've read that as well but I thought that only applied to transfer of gifts or actual presenting ceremony? It was suggested that the blade would be harder to draw from the left side? Either way I like that you mentioned that! I think ill change them today! Also it will give me more time to admire the craftsmanship thank you!
  14. I've been selling on eBay since 2003. Full time since 2013. EBay really hammers to sellers to maintain a positive rating because it starts to effect how your ads are placed and traffic etc... I follow eBay constantly and allot of the sellers are getting better because good sellers like me are starting to hold them accountable. For instance I look for "fake silver" sellers who list .925 sterling on their items. Anyways there's allot of really bad Nihonto on eBay being sold for high prices but then again there are some really great items to be found as well. It's up to the buyer to educate themselves sadly and not always rely on the description alone. Same goes for sellers. We need to ask them many questions and if they lie or list "not as described" we need to hold their feet to the fire. Also, buyers need to educate themselves before buying because sometimes buyers either get remorse or just don't want the item soon even after seeing "no returns". It's a two way street but I think sellers have gotten better (if they want to be in good standing anyways).
  15. Thanks! I'm a little embarrassed after seeing the collections of others but I'm sure you remember that feeling when you fist discovered "Nihonto" instead of jyst "samurai sword" Soon to be added tanto https://flic.kr/p/29Cmo5T D
  16. This isn't mine but I was thinking about buying it. Don't have any money now after buying a koto tanto. So basically im just drooling. The menuki looks to be Tokagowa? Either way I really like this set-up. Is that blood on the middle of cotton tie? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F352380787081
  17. Closer https://flic.kr/p/2aW4zS5
  18. Yes I agree. My thoughts early to mid Edo maybe?
  19. Not at the moment but soon hopefully I'll post the dimension. From comparison to the koshirae and length of sword it appears to be fairly large D https://flic.kr/p/2b1rHDi
  20. Seeing others nice displays I thought I would post mine. Paul Chen "great wave" on top and mid Edo Wakazashi in bottom https://flic.kr/p/29USqpf
  21. IM JEALOUS! haha Really love your setup! Where did you get the dolls, I mean cool samurai figures? I would love to see more
  22. Thought about posting this in "translations" but I thought there would be some here who might want to see this. Unless it's already beg discussed. Just wondering if this might be pre Edo? https://flic.kr/p/MfkxaF
  23. Interesting! It does look like a lock now that I've read that!
