  1. Some time ago I got information here about restoring the wrapping on the handle of my fathers war souvenir shin gunto. I hadn’t been able to pursue that with all the covid business going on, and now I find that I’ve lost the info. I was going to wrap it myself but the company that sold the wrapping offered a professional service for it. Can anyone out there recommend anyone ? Thank You !
  2. Irregardless of how or why it ended up where it is, it should go back. If they had something that we’d consider a national treasure we’d be screaming bloody murder about it.
  3. Where I come from giving your boss gifts is kissing ass. They probably did more damage to the blade with their fingers all over it than it ever had since it was made.
  4. The owner didn’t give it to Truman, it was a confiscated weapon. Some kiss-ass general presented to Truman. It should go back.
  5. If the sword in the Truman library is considered a Japanese national treasure, why don’t we give it back ?
  6. Thanks for the ID ! It’s hard to find any info on the European style swords, I only have this one book.
  7. Even without the fouled anchor ?
  8. I photographed all of the markings. There appears to be 5 characters.
  9. But what does it mean ? I may have taken the photos upside down, I don’t know.
  10. Yes, I was wondering if you knew anything about the cords and tassels, I figured it might be the tell all with the thing. One cord and tassel was bright orange, the other was royal purple and they were fastened under the handle wrapping somehow. Anyway, here’s more pix of the parade sword, I hope they show what you wanted to see. There are no navy or police markings.
  11. I'm at work right now but I'll get more pics when I get home. Can you scroll my past posts ? There's a drawing I posted . I haven't figured out how to do a PM yet.
  12. Would discarding it and restoring the wooden scabbard be an option ?
  13. What do you do with the leather field scabbard that’s falling apart due to old age ?
  14. I know this is not a valuable sword, but it’s still a piece of history and I like it and it was cheap. It’s an army parade sword and if anyone has the time, I’d like to know what the markings say. They appear to both be the same on the tang and the guard. I’m hoping it’s a Manufacturing date. Thanks.
  15. Thanks Guys, I don't know if I'll ever learn all the proper names for this stuff, I thought a ricasso was some type of barbecue grill.
  16. The hoop thing on the pommel.
  17. By the way, what is the purpose of the bail on the sword handle ?
  18. How hard would it be to find a menuki to replace the one that's missing on my sword ?
  19. . I remember that the wrap got damaged when my dad let a "buddy" take it apart looking for markings, he simply cut the wrapping with a razor blade ! My Dad wouldn't let him touch the other sword.
  20. I swear all that's holy , the flowers were spaced like that and I grew up with it untill age 16 when my dad sold it. The flowers were on both sides. I'm going to see my mom, I think she has photos of my dad with the Phillipine guerillas and he's got a sword stuck through his belt, maybe that one.. the guerillas liberated him from a pow camp and he stayed and fought with them untill MacArthur got back.
  21. I have a very clear memory of the sword my dad sold since it was supposed to be mine and I was totally fascinated with it, here's a drawing, any thoughts ?
  22. I think I'll buy the wrap and find another menuki at a gun show and tackle the wrap myself.
  23. Hey Bruce, Bruce here ! Yes I did take it apart and there's a bunch of photos of it over on the translation assistance forum. There were actually 2 swords that my dad brought back but he sold the nicer one back in 73, he never said what he got for it but later that week he bought a brand new leftover 72 Ford pickup. Bruce.
