  1. The ears are well executed in my opinion, great okimono Jeremiah.
  2. Very pleased to have this wonderful set in my collection. When I first got interested in tosogu, a dream of mine was always to own a pair of mainline goto dragons. At that point I did not have the knowledge nor the means to acquire a good set. Thankfully now after some trading I am the proud owner of these Teijo menuki. Teijo was the 9th mainline master and 41 works by him have passed Juyo. Furthermore, he is rated in the Kinko Meikan as Meiko(Great Master). While this rating is not the most important thing, as there is no logical way to judge hundreds of years of artists. I've got plenty of studying to do now, and comparing to other generations.
  3. Yes, my photos sadly will never match the quality of his.
  4. Some better photos, and the silk cover.
  5. I'll try to take better photos of the menuki tonight.
  6. Pair of solid gold menuki by the 2nd master of the Yanagawa school(Naomitsu). Surprisingly hard to photograph.
  7. I'd love to own the tree, but I'd like to see it within 2 years.
  8. Nothing wrong with something made in Meiji, while it is true many of the artisans took up new professions. Some still worked at a very high level in this period, I cant imagine anyone would not want a work by Shomin merely because he worked in the Meiji Period.
  9. Id agree with late Meiji.
  10. Thank you Pete for checking, 2M is very very much to ask for a big name unpapered set.
  11. Marco, does the set have papers? I'd be surprised if anyone was asking 2M without modern papers.

Dirk, is the paper from the NBTHK?

Here is a side by side
  14. Thank you for the clarification.
  15. Thank you Jeremiah, I got a great gift this year. It was the 2017 Nezu Museum Catalog "Pinnacle of Excellence". A great book for those interested in tosogu.
  16. I'd be interested to hear some thoughts on a school for this set. I am fairly sure it is late Edo, but I have no clue who/what school made them.

    New Kogai

I'm holding the kogai in hand. The photos make the color seem lighter than in person, it was suggested to me that it is shakudo with less gold than usual.

    New Kogai

Thank you Marius, I haven't studied the piece in detail yet so it may very well be yamagane.

Yes, I'm fairly sure it's shakudo.

I remember that lone menuki in an old thread, it has some great details to it.
