  1. There was one on ebay with a wakizashi mounted, looked late war made. If memory serves me right I recall reading that near the end of the war they stopped adding the second haikan. If it has obvious signs of later war make it wouldn't be a big leap to say it was an original single haikan example? Harder to say because the quality of Kai Gunto didn't drop off as radically as the Shin Gunto.
  2. Arsenal blades of this era usually had Bo-Hi.
  3. Very nice, I would wait until the dollar gets better, gold will continue to rise in value.
  4. I think this is a colonial or police variant of the Kyu Gunto.
  5. For $300 bucks you did very well, it's a little more unusual to have that parade style grip with combat blade.
  6. It looks like some sort of Murata-To/arsenal blade, the Horimono isn't executed very well so it may be an NCO arsenal blade. The earlier blades were very well finished for non traditional work:
  7. There was one in gunto mounts sold on ebay the other week, will try find the listing for you.
  8. I would think it's more likely the swords are made in Mukden then shipped to Tokyo Arsenal for inspection, Koshirae and distribution? It's no coincidence I have seen Mantetsu and other swords with the "W" mark using the same Koshirae maker.
  9. Another one with NTHK papers but later Mantetsu-To mei: https://www.Japanese-sword-katana.jp/katana/1910-1115.htm
  10. Muromachi wakizashi as well, tired but in good polish, I still like to get it out because it has just about every activity (and many flaws) in the book. Having your first real old sword in hands is a special memory.
  11. That would be a good Kantei exercise, looking at a whole barrel of Shin Gunto and picking the good ones. Mind you I am close to having a decent barrel, perhaps the military sword collectors can play a game with each other sometime!
  12. I would want a signed letter of authenticity from the Emperor of Japan.
  13. There are actually two "W" stamps on this one, there is another on at the bottom of the nakago.
  14. Thank you guys, yes Klaus, Yoshiharu is the one, found some examples with the same Mei.
  15. I believe the first character is "Kane" but can't figure out the second character or the date, any help would be most appreciated.
  16. I follow his listings, you get some good deals for papered swords.
  17. "A fool and his money are soon parted" - Unscrupulous Japanese dealer
  18. It would be interesting to see the average quality of swords with aluminium saya, they more often than not have good quality koshirae from memory. My one has pierced tsuba, mon, 8 seppa etc seen on early good quality mounts consistent with late 30's.
  19. I would only dare to use those on an already poor condition polish where you couldn't see anything. Suggesting for an amateur to haul off with finger stones is not what this forum is about or condones, especially on a tanto like that.
  20. I would say the only acceptable restoration with saya is re-plating a Kyu Gunto one.
  21. This is a modern chinese fake, suitable for display but by no means authentic in any way.
  22. Here's one to add to the pot: https://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-RARE-WWII-Period-Chinese-Shin-Gunto-sword-Presented-to-American-General/133126980426?hash=item1efefc834a:g:zU4AAOSw6vhdPjeo
  23. Better off properly restored than let rot away or simply replaced with a totally non-original Tsuka. I would rather have the original Tsuka professionally rewrapped than a non matching one.
