does a second hole in the tang mean that the sword was retrofitted to military from an existing sword? this sword has a "v" notch towards the butt end of the tang. is that mean anything?

Hello all, I am new to this and like schultz "I Know Nothing". I have an old samurai brought back during WW2. Its not in the best shape but I removed the handle ( what there is of it) and found markings. There is rust on the tang but I am able to make out the inscription that i am attaching. Any help on what it means would be appreciated.
