  1. Although all is pretty much good to spread around just because it gives people context and a 'guide' to work by but my understanding has been that uchiko was/is used to just remove the part bit of oil, not so much do some kind of polish?

The photo's aren't that good, and considering I'm Dutch as well, seeing the description i wouldn't be turned on..

    Gorgeous Kozuka

Although its out of my price range, this is just the kind of stuff that floats my boat. Just gorgeous carving, subject and composition A pair of stylish bats to my eyes. Special feature: Copper plate Ishime-Ji Kozuka with bat design engraved and inlaid with gold. Kanehara Isso, his name Senzo, was born in Kishu or Wakayama prefecture now. Later on he has moved to Kyoto and become the student of Goto Ichijyo family which is when he was allowed to use the name Isso. He then becomes the sword smith of Kishu Tokugawa. The copper plate of this work is calm with bat design. It is quaint piece of Isso. Listed @ aoi. Edit to add the link: http://www.aoijapan.com/kozuka-kanehara-isso-kao
  4. You just scared me just a little bit, museum curators ok, but wives with rich husbands sounds like the worst place for any antique to be.. (not sure if you meant the phrasing like that..)
  5. Pete, thank you for explaining one part. But maybe its aesthetic taste but to me its not that attractive. Certainly I am not the person to spend this kind of money for it. Everyone his own
  6. Even though its function and look changed.. to me (and i might miss the point entirely, maybe because the relief is raised so highly?) it doesn't look that great, surely not in the league of other pieces I've seen..
  7. Although Kronos (i think) hit the nail on the head, i wanted to add that, for one these antique's weren't made to be collectible, and secondly the fact they really are part of the history and the cultural relevance they hold will ensure the hobby (or collecting) never dies out entirely.
  8. They look great together, color wise and design wise. I personally like the lobsters! Very stylish creature
  9. This makes me wonder why they don't use a vertical strawbundle.. Still seems like quite a crude way, and its not like they're testing the blades till they are destroyed so why the hard block?
  10. Gorgeous. Maybe send get it certified again by the NTHK for a perhaps more detailed attribution. Really stunning, i admire the symmetry in Muramasa's works a lot.
  11. Well for one, there are always exceptions to the rule. Secondly they can still be registered. And thirdly, given they will not test every sword, there is no way to know for sure if there is even one sword made entirely out of for instance foreign steel but in traditional ways. Though usually it was from what i read just a small amount, who knows.
  12. Someone passed me this link, and i remembered someone's topic about meteorites & swords. https://twitter.com/Zan_Woo/status/597352709285490688 Quite interesting.

    Bohi On Mune?

Has anyone ever seen something like this sword's mune? I don't think I've ever seen this before.. The blade seems to be a perhaps custom made blade, with both sides differing and the mune. Does anyone know more about this kind of 'bohi'? http://www.e-sword.jp/katana/1510-1081.htm
  14. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him, but if i had, I'm sure I'd feel the same way. Rip.
  15. Nice topic! Time for a little self-shaming. I don't own many swords, but out of the 3 that i own, the low quality tanto (like 400 euro), is the least worthy. Also i own quite a lot of of Japanese ceramics, i have quite a few i in hindsight shouldn't have bought
  16. Even if i had this kind of money to throw around, this would put me off pretty much straight away: Buyers' Obligations ALL BIDDERS MUST AGREE THAT THEY HAVE READ AND UNDERSTOOD BONHAMS' CONDITIONS OF SALE AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THEM, AND AGREE TO PAY THE BUYER'S PREMIUM AND ANY OTHER CHARGES MENTIONED IN THE NOTICE TO BIDDERS. THIS AFFECTS THE BIDDERS LEGAL RIGHTS. Way to cover your buns.. Those auction houses are no fun but they do get nice stuff.
  17. I happened to recall that specific one (and after a little searching found it) because i went into business with UJ:) Also I'm not quite sure but i can imagine the first governmental registration invites were send to known collections, or at least families known to harbor historically important pieces. However I'm not quite sure if we could come up with works holding the first numbers from the nthk & nbthk That would be a sight to have those pieces collected in one topic, sorry for the derailing!
  18. How about this one? http://new.uniquejapan.com/a-masatsune-nidai-wakizashi/ Nr. 31!
  19. The blade looks legit to me. See this link for more about its shape: http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/styles.html I can't say anything about the signature, and it seems to have some dirt and stuff in it so the chisel strokes aren't clear to see. Fittings look like half gendai koshirae (but no saya in photo's) and the tsuba a little older. . Edit seems to have been shortened once (second mekugi ana and below habaki.
  20. Or of the blades or the interior or anything
  21. Wow Bugyotsuji thats awesome! And i just love the Japanese interior! More photo's please
  22. Haha, at least it looks like they had a great time though!
