  1. Thank you Ford for the mentioning! yes indeed this would be Toryusai and it is quite a nice piece! Typical for toryusai school Tsuba it has this flat Nanban style Kin Zogan. It is said that Tanaka Kiyotoshi the founder of the school was the son of a Nanban Tsuba artist which is why he used this technique a lot.
  2. Je parle un peu le francais aussi tu peux me contacter a contact@tsuba.info

  6. This Motive is called Kasumi Karasu which can be translated as 'Crow in the mist'
  7. Yes, I feel so too about the design, quite charming! The iron does not strike me as Akasaka from the pictures, but would have to see it in hand. Are there linear forging lines on the inside or the rim visible? The Kozuka hitsu looks like Akasaka but one would expect a slightly smaller Kogai hitsu. Maybe the attribution refers to the origins of the Akasaka school in Kyoto. Also the overall thin execution of the design and the plate would rather point to Kyo-Sukashi. Whichever attribution is right, it is a nice old Tsuba!

  10. Hi Brian, did you sell this at the show? If not you should try to paper it. As from the 4th master till the 9th all Akasaka masters were called Tadatoki, I would be very interested which one this turns out to be. I believe it shouldn’t be too late.

  14. Hello Nihonto and Kodogu enthusiasts! My name is Paul Kremers and I am a licensed antiques and sword dealer in Japan. I have started www.Tsuba.info about 3 years ago with the goal of providing high quality pictures of high quality Tsuba for all of us to have good reference material available on the go. As my father has been collecting Tsuba for over 40 years I had been in the lucky position to be able to see very good items right from the beginning and I got accustomed to it. Due to his large collection of iron Sukashi Tsuba I was lucky to learn about really good iron patina early and I realized that it is one of the most difficult parts of Tsuba appreciation. You can find a large collection of Tsuba under www.Tsuba.info/schools. Also check out the subsections about Owari, HIgo or Goto for example. As I myself am quite fond of the Goto school, I am trying to publish more and more high quality items by the mainline masters. Apart from Kodogu and Nihonto I offer a wide range of services such as certification through the NBTHK in Tokyo or sword import and export to and from Japan. And yes, also Yahoo auctions proxy bidding if you feel like going on an online treasure hunt! Feel free to contact me at contact@tsuba.info

  19. Hi Dan, it might be an Akasaka Tsuba or even an early Akasaka from the time these were still made in Kyoto. check out some good reference Tsuba by the school www.tsuba.info/akasaka
  20. I guess people in the US will be more than able to help you identifying it and distinguishing if it is worth restoring (polishing). My advice would be, only have it polished in Japan by certified polishers. If you need help finding one let me know. I live in Japan and facilitate polishing and certificates from the Japanese association for the preservation of Japanese art swords (NBTHK). Cheers and don't cut yourself Paul
  21. Hello I am selling a Mito Tsuba with the design of Aritoshinomiya which is well known from many Yasuchika Tsuba. Size: H: 86 mm W: 82 mm R: 4.4 mm Sd: 3.6 mm 280000 JPY, accepting offers. Some more write up here: https://tsuba.info/product/tsuba-mito-aritoshinomiya-蟻通宮/
  22. Really a sad story, but I would also assume it will still arrive, just with very heavy delay. I had so much bad experience with DHL, I wonder, did you get any answer from them by phone? Also I would expect the package to arrive at UK customs and you would receive a letter from them requesting an invoice etc. according to my experience. Well keeping thumbs pressed. Let us know when it arrives!
