NBTHK Tosogu Shinsa status PLEASE COMMENT! This month's application for the certification of sword fittings at NBTHK was filled within 39 minutes from the start of the application. Since NBTHK has reduced the amount of applications per Shinsa to 650 there is now a race to get your items into Shinsa. The losers have to wait another three months... Is this the beginning of the end of the certification system overall? Is there a shortage of experts available to judge the authenticity of sword fittings? It is sad to see this development and might it finally lead to a complete renunciation from the certification system overall? Please comment your thoughts on this. How could we preserve the current certification system which is one of its kinds in the art world? Are you in favour of the system at all?

Thank you Ford for the mentioning! yes indeed this would be Toryusai and it is quite a nice piece! Typical for toryusai school Tsuba it has this flat Nanban style Kin Zogan. It is said that Tanaka Kiyotoshi the founder of the school was the son of a Nanban Tsuba artist which is why he used this technique a lot.

Yes, I feel so too about the design, quite charming! The iron does not strike me as Akasaka from the pictures, but would have to see it in hand. Are there linear forging lines on the inside or the rim visible? The Kozuka hitsu looks like Akasaka but one would expect a slightly smaller Kogai hitsu. Maybe the attribution refers to the origins of the Akasaka school in Kyoto. Also the overall thin execution of the design and the plate would rather point to Kyo-Sukashi. Whichever attribution is right, it is a nice old Tsuba!

Hi Brian, did you sell this at the show? If not you should try to paper it. As from the 4th master till the 9th all Akasaka masters were called Tadatoki, I would be very interested which one this turns out to be. I believe it shouldn’t be too late.

Most likely Sadanaga an early to mid Edo master there were two generations
