" All, So far all has gone well with the new study group. Facebook can be a bit confusing, especially when you don't spot 'comments'.
Ian Bottomley "
On the open forums and Social medias, the amount ( and wide range of knowledge) of enthusiast makes it hard to "control" the desired contents intended, of the subject "at hand"..
I am a low ( very low) knowledge level enthusiast, and I love to read all I can, from all you leaders of the Nihonto and Katchu fields.
It's when people like me start asking "hampering Questions", that disrupts the flow of the discussion.
One Facebook Group just changed their name from Japanese Ceramic Collectors, to Japanese Studio Pottery Collectors,
to try and reinterated, "Narrow down", and focus the group back to their original intent.
" I tried FB....can't get used to it. Impossible to easily access past info, and derails far too easily. But you have a good team, and will be following along soon. " - Brian
That is one of Facebooks drawbacks, their narrow/ small Dialog Boxes.Takes so long to scroll down to look/scan for older entries..And, the remaining space on the Page is "Ad's and "trying to connect" people..As a enthusiast, I like to read everything you guys write or tell, because, sooner or later, that item or subject arises and the old saying "I remember reading something about that" clicks in..So, even letting the low level enthusiast can have "Read Only" axcess, without commenting.. "everything helps"..Thanks Guys..Alton < The Dagashi Samurai -
The link is for the the US (region 1) so need to wait for the European region DVD
Good Morning guys..
I just asked Brad if there was going to be a Region 2 edition.
I will post his reply, (Time difference) as, many more people might want to know the avaiability.

I just received and watched "FORGIVE DON'T FORGET" for the first time.
I am very impressed at everything done. EVERYTHING.
Loved it..
The story, and, the many stories told along the way, was very heartfelt.
And, if you love Japanese Swords and culture, it made the movie even more deep.
Good job Brad, Paul and Paul..
As the saying goes....
Like the movie Sekigahara, there is something in there for everyone.
The video is low priced... well worth the good feeling the people will bring you!!
They make you want to go out and help others, or,
do your part as a Human being, that is better off that those who are unfortunate,
or, face with tragic things that are beyond thier control.
Hi Alton,
Thank you so much for the kind comment on FB!
I’m glad the film resonated with you in that way.
Would you mind leaving a review on Amazon or iTunes?
We would so appreciate it!
PS my wife and I are visiting Hawaii next month!
Thanks!
Brad

I am proud to be one of the original " backers" for this project
I got this e-mail from Brad Bennett:
Hi everyone,
Look what came in yesterday! Fresh off the authoring press!
We're still waiting on Blu-Rays from the distributor (Gravitas Ventures), and once those units come in, we'll ship all discs + digital copies out (ETA within the next two weeks).
Excited to finally get these discs out to you all!
We've heard a lot of positive feedback from those who watched the doc since the launch last week.
If you could leave a quick review (once you've actually watched the film) like Ryan did on iTunes, that would help us out a lot.
Thanks in advance!!

Thank You all.
Thank you Ian.
Nice to have you take the time out for your postings and to bring this post to it's conclusion.
I got lots of Samurai DVD's and many have those big Battle scenes, with lots of Horo equipt Riders.
In "Sekigahara 2017", the horo riders added "color' to the Battle scenes.
That movie had something for everybody.
BTW, the horo is still used today by some of the Super Heros.
They now call it a Cape.

Hello Guys..
Just a thought.
This is evident in the nuclear world.
VS1 is based on actual personal observation.
No deviation..
No one was with the Sword all of the sword's life.
How could anything be accounted for, or , verified in the vastness of time.
VS 2 - Base on certified records or references.
The person signing , says the item meets all of the requirements of a "said" Reference /Document.
Sorry, disreguard if not relavent.
Just from my experience in the Nuclear world.

Thanks John..

Hi Evan..
Thanks..
Nice to see you
Good " Words of wisdom " about "assuming" contents in signed boxes..
A potter's "signature" ( His writings) or Family Kiln Stamp/Markings are always ( Most times) re-assuring..
Guys, try looking at the photo below, of Family/kiln Stamp/marks..
sometimes, the area where the Seal is "Stamped", the material looks a bit different than the sourounding/adjacent surface.
some, look like there was a dab of "Heavry Body" Acrylic in the spot, and, re-stamped..
I was going to buy the Red Glaze Kichizaemon Chawan, but, was not sure of the seal.
and, it was " 1/2" priced.
.
The Black Glazed was bought from a "reputable" person.. I paid a lot.. >
Thanks for posting and viewing guys..

Thanks for posting that Aexl.
This Mizusashi has that kind of big lumpy Glazing too ..
Peter,
I posted about the gunomi that was in someone else's Tomobako (Wooden Box).
just for the forum to see.
There is always a market for Shoji Hamada's works.
There's a Shoji Hamada Plate going for about 600 now..
and,
Phil Rogers ( of Goldmark) has a FB Page (Japanese Ceramic Collectors) that keeps the late Shoji Hamada's Legacy going..
There are many people that are still interested and following his works.
I believe , if you post there, you will get a lot of people seening them..
His son Tomoo, just put on a beautiful Exhibition at the Hanku Department Store..
A brief note about Shoji Hamada..
From 2000 Cranes site:
In the late 1920's in Japan, a small group of artists started the Mingei, or, "Folk craft" movement.
It was a reaction to what they saw as the increasing threat of Industrialization upon traditional, handmade crafts. For them, modern society's eye for beauty in simple untesils for daily life was becoming blinded by low cost and standardization.
So, a group of potters, including Benard Leach, Hamada Shoji, and, Kawai Kanjiro, sought to keep the craftsman sprit alive by producing everyday objects which satisfied the practical as well as the spritual needs of life. The works they made were funtional, expressive, yet, unassuming.
As a matter of principal, Mingei wares were hardly ever signed. " - from 2000 CRANES

Hello Guys..
Any of you guys collect Kayakuire ?
Would it be considered as art, like Sumisubo.. ( "Tools" that are decorative and/or Personalized ).
I was starting ..
Is the Gourd a Kayakuire?
On the other post by Anthony and another post with Piers,
We were discussing if the netsuki gun was 'Funtional"..
not for projectiles, but, maybe a lighter, or "Cap Gun"..?
Thanks Guys...

Axel..

Hi guys..
Hi Alex, I did not buy it.
I was going to buy it..
Waited for his reply, before buying.
I should have mentioned, something else, in the 1st. post,
So, I can understand the "negative" cannotation because of that..
Maybe that is how he/she bought it, and, is just a seller.
" Sneaky title! Wonder if that was deliberate. Hmmmm " - Mr. B
I've seen some other listings, that have...
" with signed box, and, Monk Appraisal, by the great --------"...
I got one with a name like, " The 1000 year old Pine Tree." ( or something like that)..
The Chawan had no Green on it..

Hello Guys..
"Let the Buyer Beware" > The Sting
I thought I was going to be a Proud owner of a Genuine Tomoo Hamada Yunomi..
I wanted to be the 1st. to "Buy it Now" ..
"If it's too good to be true, it probaly is"..
The price was "Affordable"..
but, the Yunomi was "Mumei"..
I follow Tomoo on FB, so, I asked him, if this was his "Yunomi"..
He said, the box is his, but, the Yunomi is not.
Old American Saying.. " I'm glad I asked"...
Well, the Seller's tittle is true :
"Japanese Mashiko pottery Yunomi Bamboo Tea cup with box by Tomoo Hamada"

Hi Dave,
I understand the statement..
For me, as being mostly an enthusiast..
I'm sure you know this.
That saying a samurai said, everything is connected.
You and them, keep up the art. and sprit of the Samurai armor.
You do it in a more realistic, closest to original way, and pass that on to us..
They, do what they have to do, because of being in the Replica / Representation / Business $$ oversighted" , manor.
different venues, both a plus and needed.
For what they are, they help with a visual presence, and, help carry on the Samurai stories/ Sprit..
I got 3 lower budget ( lower than theirs ) Suits for that Visual presence.
and, when I do see my "Real" ( Cross my Fingers) Kabutos and Do's, I can appreciate the age, the stories it could tell.
Their soul.
Hope it's not...... "I'm a fake, Ha Ha !!"
So, The real Katchu do have a "soul".. Because you guys teach us that.
Othwerwise, like, to most people," It's just some old piece of junk"..
And Dave, your house is full of soul...
We seen it
Thanks Dave

Ian..
Thanks for adding to this post.
The Horo story was hard to "piece together" , as, the information is learned, only as much as we can get from the various sources on the 'net..
I had hoped to "gather" all, and, put them on this post, for the forum to have a good concensus of what it is.
Old saying..
The who, what, when , where and why..
If I may..
Quote you ..
"These late versions incorporated a framework of Bamboo......"
I forgot, I got your book.. page 59 and 60.
Don't worry, i will not say more,
They got to buy your book...
Guys,
I remember, seening a tv show, and the guys was testing a horo, by shooting arrows at it.
I don't think it was MythBusters.
Maybe Terry Schappert ?

Good Morning Forum,
Interesting facts Ian , Sir..
Thank you.
Ian,
I'm not sure if this is true.
and I know many here might have seen/read this too..
but.. I've read somewhere,
that the horo was also a defense mechanism that "deflected' the arrows path, by letting the "flapping" cloth
mis aligning the incoming path of the arrow.
Especially if they were Messengers.
Many interesting "Pieces" of information on such an unusal concept.
Mankind can think up many good , ideal things,
Alton
From the internet:
- The horo (母衣) were large pieces of cloth, not entirely unlike a cape or cloak, which would be worn on the back, supported and shaped by a series of bamboo or wooden sticks. In addition to displaying an identifying mon or symbol, and making the samurai appear larger-than-life, it served the purpose of arrow entangler. Ultimately, it marked that warrior as someone important, usually a messenger or scout, and worthy of honorable treatment, even by his enemies.

Hello guys..
I made it into a shot video, (for our convience)
to have a cool explaination of how the HORO Basket got it's name.
I'm not sure if it is true,, but, I thought it was cool and neat watching it.
I hope you guys do, too..
https://samuraihoro.weebly.com/
I got this subscription for a website package, that lets me make several of these "convinient" sites.
Easy to up load and navigate, for fun stuff.
this way, I can uplaod short videos without a host.

Looks good.
Small conner, but, big, in that...
stirs interest as the eyes focus on each item, and, it's layout/position to each other.
"Usage of Space".. ( A Rimpa School trait you have )
Smart use of those clear acrylic lifters.
minimize loss of light to the objects below..
The box lids used for display base is cool too.
The Charie on the lid is "Traditionaly correct", as, I've heard/watched somewhere, they are "respected" or "Important' as to,
always be displayed on a tray.
And, yes, the brazier and tea kettle at the bottom would complete the realm of the display.
Both aesthetacally and balance.
Good things do come in small packages.

Hello guys..
It does look like Bamboo. Good call Steve/Steve.
Ear lugs.. "Mimi-something".. adds a lot to the looks.
I finally bought the DVD, "SEKIGAHARA".
Myself, I thought everything was good.
I was quite moved by the Movie's portrayal of Mitsunari Ishida.
Far from the Ishida in JC's "SHOGUN". Which I loved too.
Hence, the music choice Steve..
One of the critics said it could have been a trilogy.
I would have loved that.
You would have to be keen on all the people involved.
This is a fun way to get started.. :
I just made this video on my "Japanese Ink Painting Techniques" on Chawans..
These/none are not "advertisements" /for sale videos.
They are for relaxation and appreciation of Japanese Art.

Mei Or Not A Mei On Edo Katana
in Translation Assistance
Posted
Hello Guys,
Please help with your thoughts..
This was my 1st. "Real" Japanese Sword I bought in 2012.
I have yet to know if this is a Mei, or, ??
This Sword was said to be from the Edo Period.
Thanks for viewing..
