Note, that Admin hopes you won't take offence, to being told that your applying stones to a Nihonto blade, is not acceptable.

I can assure you, that in the past there were those, who would not have offered such an olive branch.

They would in fact, have accused you of giving offence, by admitting such an act to us, who regard ourselves as custodians of Nihonto blades.

  2. Cheers Guys,  I've got a fair number of showa era gunto and the patina on this sword in my opinion isn't faked.  The Tsuba and the rest of the furniture are genuine and fit the sword perfectly.  I'm pretty sure its a genuine WW2 used sword, I just haven't seen one like it myself before.

    David

I don't find you entirely wrong.

But the tsuba and furniture in your opinion being genuine, does not give the blade any pedigree.

It could well be a genuine "WW2 used sword", but knocked up on any of the occupation areas in that period.

You must agree it does not pay any respect, to the pattern idea of 'gunto'

  3. I will send my art swords to a trained polisher. I want to practice on scrap blades.

If the blades are nihonto and are worn, of seemingly no value or have suffered abuse in the way you intend. They are not 'scrap', they are still part of their history and demand respect. This site is, "Dedicated to the study and preservation of Japanese swords and fittings". There is no distinction here between blade state, or value.

    Respect.

  4. If you consider there is a lesson to be learned here, then in reality its a cheap lesson.

$300 out, a blade in (which is not a bad example) for study purposes.

A flaw in the nakago can be forgiven at that money.

Sit back enjoy the examination of the blade.

Me I think you have luckily come out, bruised, but not scarred.

  5. Magic Dave, on Sunday you told me of your achievements in this endeavour, I got your point but not the extent that you have shown here.

This is an exciting accomplishment, and it is my hope that you become 'the man' in this field here in the UK.

Your personal investment spending in this project is significant, we must all do our best to support you, and ensure a financial success.

  6. Cheers Dave.

The conversation we had into your armour restoration, and the examples I was shown, were an insight into a fascinating world.

Thanks for giving me your time.

Ian B was also a great help on an item I took to show him, I will post photos of same on here later, thanks again Ian.

Peter McCafferty and I have been chatting on the www, for it must be 4 years, and met for the first time, nice one Peter!

It was a great day, well worth the effort.

  7. Grant,

most Nihonto purists will not be that interested in this type of sword, as its not a nihonto. military sword enthusiast's will be interested due to that police swords don't normally have this quality of blade

    Grant

Hamfish has nut shelled what you perceived as a lack of response earlier. This boards main objective is the study of nihonto, hence its title.

Military enthusiasts are also catered for, but does give rise to a divided forum.

Don't think I as a nihonto custodian won't give you my time, its just that I have not entered this area of study, so have no valid opinions to give.

I am not alone here, but I do admire your attempts to research and question.

Don't be discouraged, as even by following these posts, I add to the little I already know.

  8. I can't believe the lack of interest???  Am I the only one who thinks the blade may be handmade?  if not than I would think this thing would garner a little discussion.  Shows my inexperience, I guess.

    Grant

    Be fair to yourself here!

You posted at 6.16am and at 2.28 you expect a wealth of discussion!!

Not only is it a working day, but the board is world wide with different time zones.

    Patience is a virtue.

  9. Antti, I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you: you are not allowed to post items like this.

It promotes envy, discontent, avarice and jealousy.

But as it gets such a positive response, nice one.

So glad you decided to post. Thanks.
