  2. I would also add my prayers ....I received this update message from a friend at Sullivans MiddleSchool (US Base) in Yokosuka: "Just found out that we are in “voluntary evacuation” at this time. No school until further notice. DoDDs teachers are in phase 1 of evacuation and will be flown to Korea starting tonight and tomorrow. Ships with dependents are already leaving the area. I am going home, packing a bag and headed back to base and waiting at Fleet so we can be taken to Narita or Atsugi to be flown to Korea asap. Obama has recommended and approved this evacuation; not mandatory NEO at this point, but could be. Radiation winds are to be sweeping through here early next week."
  3. Wishing all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. May we bring the world closer to peace. Pete
  4. Merry Christmas to all. This forum and it's members is a daily source of knowledge shared for me. Thank You to all who share their thoughts here. Let Peace begin with me............ Peter
  5. Thank You both for the quick replies. This is my first attempt at identifying this sword. I am thrilled that with the help I've received I have a correct translation. Is there any information that will identify the era that this smith was active. Has anyone here seen this signature before? Anywhere that I should be looking? Please forgive my naivete', But I do believe that I have caught the "bug" that seems to be prevalent here, the thirst for knowledge and understanding of art. Just the thought that I have a link with the traditions of the past makes me hunger for more. Is there anyone here in the North New Jersey area that I should be in contact with? The blade is in pretty rough shape, but there are some definite patterns visible.
  6. This is a Wazikashi that was brought back by my Dad in 1945. I am beginning to take an interest in studying this and would appreciate any help that the board can give me in translating and identifying the smith and age of this blade. A relative with a degree Japanese History gave me some help in my initial translation. He came up with "Bizen kuni Osafune ju Tadashige saku". Is this correct and if so does anyone have any information about him? When was he active, is he a listed smith etc... Your patience with my questions and requests is greatly appreciated. Pete
  7. Looks like this to me. Great lighting demo! \Pete
  8. Thanks Grey. He is affiliated with The Museum of Natural History in NYC as well as Sotheby's. I will be careful as I can. No one will work in anything until I am satisfied with their expertise for certain. Pete
  9. Thank you all for your suggestions. A friend of mine who is a museum director is looking into his contacts to find someone here in the NY area that might be of help. I will post as I get further info. The sword that this was mounted on is in pretty rough shape. It looks as if someone tried to clean it some time back. The koshirae fittings show dragonflies on the fuchi and kashira. The menuki are horses. The habaki is "rain"? and is 2 piece Here is a photo
  10. Thanks all here's the reverse side. Is there some significance to the design? And how should I clean it? Pete
  11. This is the Tsuba from my Dad's wakizashi that was brought back from Japan in 1945. Any help in identifying the smith and approximate year of manufacture is appreciated. I will post photos of the sword in the nihonto section. Signed Yoshiharu ? It is 2 5/8 inches in diameter and about 1/8 inch at the edge. Greatfully, Peter
  12. My name is Pete Pensec. I am a Photographer/Graphic Artist specializing in large format graphic production for a major Pharmaceutical company. I currently have 4 swords that I inherited from my dad when he past away. He served in WWII from 1943-1945. He was with Gen. McArthur's Island hopping brigade and recalled collecting the 2 military swords on the battlefield and the others when they occupied Japan. I even have a photo of him at the bedside of General Tojo when he attempted suicide. He brought back 2 Military mounted swords, 1 Police Saber and a Wakizashi. I am currently trying to get some info about the Wakizashi.. It appears to have great age. I will post some photos when I can. I'm looking forward to sharing with you and getting any insight you can pass on. Pete
