  1. Many things wrong with this. The Ko and Suya stamps are getting scary good, but the TO inspector stamps are crap, both on the tsuka and the blade. Copper handles never go above the 6XXX serial range. The drag on the saya is too fat. Just to name a few. I've compared it to a legit for some points:

  4. Following the link I saw that there were two volumes of the NY Met tsuba collection for sale at this site. I looked at the preview and it showed pics of tsuba with a full description, so I bought Volume 1. I am totally disappointed with it as the majority of entries are like the one attached, just a list of the metal and size of the tsuba plus who donated it. Like many of the tsuba, the ones pictured are signed, but no translation of the signature is given. The photos are of such poor quality that the signatures cannot be read. Without even a tentative identification of the school, artist and subject it is just a picture book as far as I am concerned and little use in furthering my knowledge. Sorry to be so hard, but at £50 I expected a more scholarly book. Best regards, John

  5. There is no need to achieve anything. Before buying a thing, I try to discuss it on the profile forum.

  6. Unfortunately the whole sword is of modern chinese origin. Best to seek a refund is possible.

  7. I’m tempted to say everything is real but it’s a put together sword. As for the mei, looks so bad that I believe it is fake.

  8. Hi folks, 1st, let me say thank you to all who have had such nice things to say about me in the thread above; don't know if I deserve it but it is appreciated. Now I would like to introduce you to a sword that has been consigned to my website: https://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/swords/c273-beautiful-wakizashi-yokoyama-sukekane-hozon-paper This is a 50.4 cm wakizashi signed and dated Bizen Kuni Osafune Ju Yokoyama Sukekane Saku. Kimi Banzai. Tomonari Go Ju Hachi Dai Mago (58th generation). Kaei Shichi Nen Hachi Gatsu Hi (August of 1854). I'll post a few pictures here but please click the link to my site for all the dimensions, hada & hamon, and to see pictures of every inch of the blade. Sukekane was a bright light in the Yokoyama group of smiths working in the Bizen tradition in Shinto and Shinshinto and this wakizashi is a very fine piece from the smith. As I mention in my listing, occasionally I come across a sword that speaks to me, demands attention; this is one of those. My price is SOLD, which, if you think about it, isn't a lot more than the cost of polish, shirasaya, habaki, and paper. If you are interested or need more information please contact me by email through my site, not with personal message here. Thanks for stopping, Grey

  9. Don’t think blade was switched... NBTHK just gave a more conservative attribution, albeit along the same lines, than Dr Kanzan. The flaw and conservative NBTHK attribution may be why the previous owner did not try beyond the Hozon certificate.

  10. a lifetime ago i learned kanji and translation from Grey's kanji cards. If i had a mei i would go through the cards and place ones that looked close to a kanji next to it, then when i was through i would take all the close kanji and eliminate ones until i had what i thought was right, then putting them together i could usually use Hawley's to figure out the mei and what i was missing. also when i had spare time i would study them and eventually recognized what the kanji said.

  12. tricky. hard to know. does the temper turn toward the ha at the machi? if so retemper or ubu and made to look suriage. if not still maybe retempered, or might be made that way in shinshinto and made to look older. Hard to know where the original mekugi-ana was, has it been cut off? i guess it could be O-suriage mumei with mei added later. placement of the mei and the mekugi-ana that are there are problematic. It will take some in hand study, at least you have something to study and learn from.

  14. Hello Alex, As Bruce points out a fake but a pretty well made one...If it’s cheap always handy to have around to remind you of what to look for when a genuine one turns up......A study piece so to speak..books are invaluable but no substitute for hands on.... Regards, Paul..

  15. Hopefully a someone will get this for you, but I'm leaning toward 敏光 (Toshimitsu) The mei style is different, but seems to be the same name. During the war, there were often more than one guy using the same name.

  18. EBay is strange. My login name and associated email and my 300+ positives disappeared. When I contacted them, they said that I hadn't used the account for more than two years. I provided #s of items purchased, or emails to me from them, etc. They have done nothing. I stopped using ebay.

  19. Dear Geraint and Jeremiah, Thank you for your replies and comments. Geraint appreciate your search on the clouds, I'm inspired to look again myself, if you find anything let me know. Found this one whilst googling, unfortunately little description: Jeremiah, Agree there are elements that could be Choshu, this one in the MFA collection, Inoue Kiyotaka, Chôshû School

  20. It’s indeed very odd. Part of the “shū“ appears “slipped up” to the left (intentionally or not?!). However, it seems the only plausible interpretation for me......

  21. I realised even right now from the post of Barry that we have a Dealer Showcase here in NMB - shame about me Ray, I'm very happy to find you and your stuff here in a own section. Many swords in my collection are owned from you and i was never disappointed. I can fully recommend the service, knowledge and stuff of Ray. Good luck Ray.

  22. Hi, folk! Back again after a long hiatus. For the newer types, I've been kibbutzing since the old Robert Cole forum days. Won't have anything spectacular to add now, given the meager retirement income as well as age induced lack of desire to track down old widder women and fake them out of their dear lost hubby's swords. May have some input now and then on bargain basement gunto and the like. In the meantime, Happy New Year to all.

  24. Dear Jojo. It's a wakizashi, is it? If so it will be less than 24" from tip to where the tang starts. It is signed so we could assume that it was originally an inch or two longer. First thing to say is that shinogi zukuri wakizashi are not a feature of swords from the 13th century. There area a few smiths signing Nagamitsu and from what we can see so far this just might be a later one. Last thing for now, someone, clearly not you, has done unspeakable things to the nakago with a file! This is serious damage, don't do anything to this when you get it until you have taken a lot of advice and had some better opinions from learned people here when you post some better photographs. Bet you are looking forward to opening that parcel! Enjoy. All the best.
