DESCRIPTION:\n	Gifu Prefecture Museum is celebrating it's 50th anniversa

seum's sword collection\, which is associated with the Owari Tokugawa fami
ly\, to commemorate this occasion.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	Boasting one of the
nation's leading collections of samurai culture\, the Tokugawa Art Museum
has been home to swords associated with the Owari domain and the Owari Tok
ugawa family for generations\, all made up of bequests from Tokugawa Ieyas
	u. They are unrivaled not only in their \"quality\,\" each with its own hi
story\, but also in their \"quantity\,\" which counts hundreds of items. A
mong these\, hidden behind famous swords and specialties\, there are quite
a few swords made by Mino blacksmiths that have been missed from public d
isplay until now.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	This exhibition provides a comprehens
ive introduction to swords from the Tokugawa Art Museum's collection\, inc
luding swords from Mino and Owari\, which have rarely been on public displ
ay until now.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	During the Sengoku period\, Mino swords\,
which were forged and used locally by the people of Japan as practical sw
ords\, were praised for their sharpness and ease of use\, but their value
was often overlooked.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	These unknown masterpieces of Min

DESCRIPTION:\n	On the 2rd floor exhibition room\n\n\n\n	\n From the mid
-Heian to the late Muromachi period\, the tachi was the predominant form o
f Japanese sword.\n	\n\n	\n Made over many centuries as a blade well suit
ed to mounted warfare\, the tachi survives today in numerous masterful exa
	mples.\n	\n\n	\n From the Muromachi period onward\, however\, with the ri
se of foot soldiers and the introduction of firearms shifting combat to th
e ground\, the uchigatana came to replace the tachi in practical use.\n	\n
\n	\n Even so\, within warrior society the tachi retained high ceremonial
status. It was prized as an object for presentation and as an essential e
lement of formal attire in rituals\, and its production continued for roug
	hly a thousand years up to the present day.\n	\n\n	\n This exhibition\, t

DESCRIPTION:\n	Discover the reality behind a millennium of myth at this
sweeping exhibition on the legendary Japanese warriors.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n
The samurai is an iconic figure\, evoking images of formidable fighters p
ossessing ideals of courage\, honour and self-sacrifice. Yet much of what
we think we know about samurai is invented tradition.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	O
ur concept of samurai today has its origins in medieval reality. A distinc
t warrior class – known in Japan as bushi – emerged and gained politic
al dominance from the 1100s. But during a prolonged period of peace\, begi
nning in 1615\, the samurai moved away from the battlefield to become an e
lite social class that also included women. Samurai men formed the governm
ent\, serving as ministers and bureaucrats. Many became leaders in scholar
ship and the arts\, as patrons\, poets and painters\, in a world where int
ellectual pursuits were just as important as swordsmanship. \n\n\n\n	 \n
\n\n\n	By the late 19th century\, the hereditary status of samurai had bee
n abolished and their supposed chivalric values developed into the myth of
bushido\, or 'the way of the warrior'. This new code\, promoting values o
f patriotism and self-sacrifice\, was harnessed during Japan's period of c
olonial expansion and military aggression. The modern mythology of the 'sa
murai' emerged gradually across the 20th century through interactions betw
een Japan and the wider world\, with idealised images of the historical wa
rriors increasingly consumed by foreign visitors. \n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	The
story of the evolution of the samurai is told through battle gear such as
the suit of armour sent by Tokugawa Hidetada to James VI and I\, as well
as luxury objects such as an intriguing incense connoisseurship game. From
a Louis Vuitton outfit inspired by Japanese armour\, to the popular\, loo
sely historical videogame Assassin's Creed: Shadows\, the exhibition explo
res the samurai's enduring legacy in games\, fashion and film.\n\n\n\n	 \
n\n\n\n	This major exhibition is a candid look at the real men and women w
hom we know as samurai\, from the battlefields of medieval Japan to the gl
	obal pop culture of today.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	Price : Adults from £23\, M

DESCRIPTION:\n	\n Next meeting is Sunday\, May 21st 2023 from 12pm -
	3:00 pm   \n	\n\n\n\n	\n		 \n	\n\n	\n \n Location:  165 West 46th
	Street in Manhattan\, NY 10036.  \n \n\n \n			 \n \n\n \n Please s
top at the security desk in the main lobby\, and tell the guard that you w
ill be going to the Japanese Club meeting on the 12th floor.  Proceed to
the 4th floor Sky Lobby\, and then take an elevator to the 12th floor. \n
			\n\n \n			 \n \n\n \n As always\,  members are requested to bring
in items from their collections for discussion and appreciation.  The st
ated mission of our club is the preservation\, study and appreciation of p
erhaps the most beautiful object constructed of steel\; the Japanese sword
and its accessories.   This mission is accomplished by the sharing of t
hese items by our members at our meetings. We are hoping that this year wa
s a fruitful one from a collecting perspective\,  and that members will b
ring in their new treasures to share.\n \n		  \n	\n\n\n\n	As stated in
the club's communication of 5/12/21\, the directors and officers have agr
eed that a requirement for attendance will be for all attendees to be full
y vaccinated. So that there is no misunderstanding\, you must be 2 weeks p
ast your second vaccination of either Moderna or Pfizer\, or 2 weeks past
a Johnson and Johnson vaccination.  We are using the honor system\, and t
rust that no member would ever put the health of other members in jeopardy
.  Masks are optional\, barring any major changes.  For future meetings
we will reassess the mask requirement based on both CDC guidelines and th
	e opinions of the club's directors.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	Meetings normally h
ave a one or more technical lectures on Japanese swords with a question an
d answer period. Members are asked to bring any examples from their collec
tion that fit in with the meeting topic. Everyone is the free to examine t
he items on display to apply what they have just learned as well as get to
know the members in attendance\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	As always\, we ask all
members and guests to bring in any new (or old) items from their collectio
	ns.\n\n

	1:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation is To Be Determined\n\n\n	Format: \nI wou
ld like to help drive some additional learning to this sword club. One of
the most elusive elements to sword appreciation is teminology\, blade det
ails\, and kantai. \n\nTo help this\, there will be multiple swords to ins
pect and describe. We will break up into teams\, including an advanced/in
termediate collectors with beginners. I will also bring books to help wit
h terminology that will be available for use by the teams. We will ask ea
ch team member to complete a copy of the shinsa form from the NTHK-NPO on
there own\, then discuss with the team where there are differences and why
they made the call that they did.\n	Requested Assistance: \nI have create
	d a brief survey - 4 questions - and I ask that you please complete it. T
his is to help determine whether a conference room is needed\, as well as
gauge self-described skill in this type of activity to help me start makin
g teams up.\n\nPLEASE COMPLETE THIS. I don't have the room for a group of
30 at my house and I don't want to spend $300 on a conference room if onl
