The J.C.C.C. Token Kai (Toronto sword club) is having a meeting May 28th at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre 6 Garamond at 1:00 p.m Our guest Speaker is Pierre Nadeau. Here is the outline of his talk. We welcome new members and visitors. In this case as the club is hosting Pierre we are asking for a $10 or more donation to help that support.
PART 1 - Iron, the swords and blacksmithing

Brief history of nihonto — ±15min
Just to make sure we're on the same page and mostly to put the forging practices into context

Iron — ±20
What it is and how it plays in Japanese swords

Forging à la Japanese — ±30
Placing the blacksmiths of traditional Japan into context in the world, and explain the comparison
Review of the various techniques and their outcome
Explain hada and hataraki, what is good or poor hada/hataraki

Heat treatment — ±20
The goalS of heat treatment, what it does and what solutions blacksmiths are trying to find
Review of the various solutions and ways to apply them by Japanese smiths
Effects on swords: hamon, utsuri

Polishing — ±15
What it actually does, different techniques
Its goals (geometry and appreciation)

All these look very technical (they are!), but the presentation would always be from an appraisal point of view (for non-craftsmen who look at swords).
