Shigeo Sugawa's English Book on Tanegashima

Recommended Posts

Justin, I have the English book and both of the Japanese books, I & II. The latter come up on J Yahoo auction every so often. Can you not find them on Amazon?

Make sure not to expect too much, though. Lots of information, but full of inaccuracies. I have been frequently warned off them by some people in Japan. Even with mistaken concepts and categorizations, nice to have lying around and for me a good starter book with illustrations, certainly better than nothing at all!

Thank you Piers

I am a "new owner" of a Tanegashima and just looking for reference material. The item has yet to arrive and it will take some time to get here, so the reading was to keep me in check until the matchlock arrived. I'll keep an eye out, and as for the various inaccuracies, I had been warned about such, and I appreciate you letting me know.

That's very strange, John. I'm a computer consultant & security expert by trade, & my system doesn't have any problem with that Web-site. I've probably downloaded 30 or 40 e-books from there & all work just fine, & I've never seen any sign of adware.

Would you PM me with which software is warning you off? Got me curious.

Ken

THE Japanese MATCHLOCK

in English, color printing, 60 pages: $100- A lot of good pictures, I got a signed copy direct from the author.

http://www.japaneseweapons.net/sonota/hon/english.htm

And another one is >Tanegashima-The Arrival of Europe in Japan [Paperback]

Olof G. Lidin (Author), I found a used paperback copy of this book for around $30 used. No pictures, just a lot of detailed history on the arrival of firearms in Japan. http://www.amazon.com/Tanegashima-Arrival-Europe-Japan-Lidin/dp/8791114128/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

Along with> Giving Up the Gun: Japan's Reversion to the Sword, 1543-1879 [Paperback] Noel Perrin http://www.amazon.com/Giving-Up-Gun-Reversion-1543-1879/dp/0879237732

Which you can buy for around $10

And if you can find a copy this book has both Portuguese and English text in one book.

Espingarda feiticeira: A introdução da arma de fogo pelos portugueses no Extremo-Oriente = The bewitched gun : the introduction of the firearm in the far East by the Portuguese by Rainer Daehnhardt
