THE JAPANESE MATCHLOCK A Story Of The Tanegashima

Recommended Posts

I just received a copy of this fantastic book by Shigeo Sugawa. Anyone interested in the subject of samurai firearms should put this book on their list. I ordered my copy right from the authors web site and it arrived in the mail about 2 weeks later, (signed by the author) the cost with shipping from Japan was $120. There are a lot of very good quality pictures of Tanegashima and related items along with historical information. This is one of the few books on this subject that I could find on this subject. The book is 60 pages in color and in English.

Eric, there are two volumes to this work in Japanese, but possibly only the one in English. Firstly may I agree with you that there is very little in English on this subject and in such detail. It's a great coffee table book to leaf through. Please be aware that there are many things which you will need to take with a pinch of salt. This is a public site, so I cannot say more here.

Suffice it to say, it needs quite a bit of further editing of one form or another. Congratulations!

Piers, I just look at the pictures!!!...but seriously...what is a mere coffee table book for you is a serious reference manual for us mortals who have no access to any other publications that we can understand. I did purchase a great Tanegashima book from Book of Dreams but it is in Japanese. That leads to my next subject...When are you going to write a book on the subject? The information on the forum that you Ron, Ian and others have posted is an valuable reference source but putting it all in writing would be the way to go. You could correct all those ''many things'' that cant be mentioned.
