How do togishi make the colour difference when polishing

Hello all...

I watched a togishi documentary Brian posted, or at least I think it was him...

and my question is how does the Togishi make the colour differences on the blade? ie a whitish hamon, and a darker upper part... I also saw togishi drawing straight lines with a kind of pencil/thick needle on the blade as a sort of signature..

what do they use? do they use "normal" graphite? with what metal or material do they get the darker upper colour?

any info more than welcome!

best wishes,

KM
