Hi , It certainly looks like a salmon, like a sockeye a Pacific breed. Do Japanese water have sockeye? What is dangling from its' mouth? An eel? John

Hi,

Most popular salmon in Japan is chum salmon. Also I think Japanese water have sockeye, though I am unsure about distribution of fishes.

The dangling material is a cord to hang the fish.

Besides the location of mei, I think the motif is very interesting, because it is not a mere fish but a fish (maybe a salmon) as our food.

It reminds me of the paintings of Takahashi Yuichi (高橋由一).
