Help with kamon

Recommended Posts

I must add that it might also be possible it is a crest from the marriage between two families, they often combined crests when that happened, and it might also be possible it is a fantasy crest...

especially after meiji and I think also earlier, the crest function of representing ONLY certain samurai families was abandoned, so also merchants and others were able to wear and use kamon.

what is the estimated age of this saihai, and do you have more images of it?

Thanks KM. Those websites are great.

Some very small pictures of the saihai are attached (these are from the seller's website). I will take some better pics and post them up tomorrow.

The estimated age is mid-late Edo.

Details are as follows (again taken from seller's website):

Baton: Lacquered wood shaft with engraved gilded copper end cap fittings.

Tassel: Washi paper. Remains full bodied overall but has clearly had several individual paper lengths cut away on the top of the tassel body and on the underside. The tassels are generally wrinkled and soiled with age as could only be expected. Brocade silk cloth covered central wood body. Thick rolled paper tie cord lenght in excellent order.

Comments: A decent original period example of a commander's saihai. Engraved end cap fittings which feature a unique variation of the mokko kamon crests variety. Original scalloped edge two layer grommets all present and in excellent order. Engraved edge trims and pierced inome decorative designs. Leather attaching thong solid and well preserved. Silk tassel in overall fair condition.

Dimensions: Shaft - Approximately 33.5 cm in length. Tassel 29 cm in length.

Regards

Justin
